  • What Was Mr. Stone THINKING?

    Rated - 1.0 star

    [Highly rated reviewer]

Alexander is essentially about this Russian sounding babe (played by Ms. Jolie) who marries into this big Oirish family, is driven to preferring snakes because her husband only has one eye, and begins dying her little boy's hair blonde. Then it all kicks off, Colin Farrell gets his eyebrows bleached and goes off in a flouncy tamtrum to conquer the world. Meanwhile Jared Leto stands around with a twisty Cher hairdo, gazing longingly at bottle-blondie Colin, who every now and then gazes back with tears in his eyes and whispers 'Oy cahnt live if livin' is without you...'

So anyway, about half way through that really handsome guy from The Book Group (the one in the wheelchair) and those porridge commercials shows up, but he has a different hairdresser... he stands around alot, proving that sensible haircuts WERE possible in ancient times. I think he loses his razor at one point, but finds it again eventually... later Tim Piggott-Smith has to smush his hands around inside a dead animal, but they cut all his lines, so of course it all makes PERFECT sense.

    Then the elephants come.

  • Alexander The Embarrassing

This guy couldn't conquer a lettuce leaf. Big name actors who all without exception, for some unfathomable reason, lost their ability to act....Absolute drivel.

No I made two hours , but couldn't take anymore, how on earth did he think he would get an Oscar for this? Absolute poo poo, what's with the accents?

    And the models were awful

  • Don't watch it

Don't waste your time. It's an absurd film. It's like a bad history class, too much talk, poor and little action. The worst it's that they insist in showcasing ancient homosexuality as a queer tale. Terrible.

  • crazily underrated

    A touching and brilliant film!

I don't see why it receives such negativity! Yes, at times it is a little confusing due to it skipping to various points in Alexander's life but so are other great films like Inception. After watching it twice I fully understood it, people just need to give it a chance.

The cast is fantastic - Colin Farrell and Anthony Hopkins are amazing. Also, the soundtrack is simply beautiful.

Great for any lover of ancient history.

  • An epic mess

    Rated - 2.0 stars
    By a customer , 13 Aug 2011
As a classical history buff whose favourite historical figure is Alexander the Great, I wanted to like this. I'd enjoyed a lot of the cast's previous work (Farrell, for instance, was excellent in Tigerland) and Stone has produced some real greats in his time. Pity this wasn't one of them.

From those inexplicable Irish accents, to the horrible direction; from the laughable script to the completely chronologically inaccurate plot, this film is one big mess. The only positive I can give this film is that it's pretty, and Farrell's anachronistic black roots threaten even that.

Alexander's is a great story that I hope (with someone competent at the helm) will be made into a truly epic film one day.
