What Was Mr. Stone THINKING?By robertconnor (177 reviews) from Gloucestershire , 20 Jan 2005
[Highly rated reviewer]Alexander is essentially about this Russian sounding babe (played by Ms. Jolie) who marries into this big Oirish family, is driven to preferring snakes because her husband only has one eye, and begins dying her little boy's hair blonde. Then it all kicks off, Colin Farrell gets his eyebrows bleached and goes off in a flouncy tamtrum to conquer the world. Meanwhile Jared Leto stands around with a twisty Cher hairdo, gazing longingly at bottle-blondie Colin, who every now and then gazes back with tears in his eyes and whispers 'Oy cahnt live if livin' is without you...'
So anyway, about half way through that really handsome guy from The Book Group (the one in the wheelchair) and those porridge commercials shows up, but he has a different hairdresser... he stands around alot, proving that sensible haircuts WERE possible in ancient times. I think he loses his razor at one point, but finds it again eventually... later Tim Piggott-Smith has to smush his hands around inside a dead animal, but they cut all his lines, so of course it all makes PERFECT sense.
Then the elephants come.

exellent movieBy kizamiwarrior (85 reviews) from Ruislip , 06 Mar 2009All i can say is this movie was excellent, plenty of action , don't know how historically true it is , didn't care , kept me enthralled from from start to finish , didn't rate Colin much as an actor in other movies, except in phone booth , but my opinion has changed he was brilliant as Alexandra , if your in to epics this is for you.
Worst EverBy a customer from Bodmin , 09 Feb 2009Rape, Rape Rape what can I say. DO NOT LET UNDER 18's WATCH THIS HORROR I cant believe how very terrible this film was. Not only am I am big fan of AJ but I am a big History buff especially on Europe and Asia etc during that time frame especially Egypt, Greece and Italy. I was so anoyed at the film I hardly watched it all. And as for some people saying that its so good because it was historicaly acurate, history didnt make it that way the director and script writer did its terrible. Yes history used to be bad and graphic but this film was a big pile of something else bad. People claiming this was because it followed history are right in the sence that they try to keep the storyline as close to history as possible and for this the film was OK but as a film I will never ever hope to see it again. As for the films rating it should be an 18. My recomendation is to treat it as an 18.
Oh Come On!By a customer from HIGH WYCOMBE , 08 Jan 2009Most people seem to bash this film and I suppose that's an easy thing to do. But, it gives a watchable walk through some ancient history and I think some of the negative reviews come from people who just can't stay with anything that uses commentary for more than a few minutes (perhaps a modern trait?)
The cinematography is excellent and a lot of money has been spent on the battle scenes. When you look at what this guy achieved in his short life, it's surprising that it can be reduced just down to 3+ hours and still retain some continuity.
When you see what's been done to verifiable history, such as Pearl Harbour and the Roman Empire in recent times, Oliver Stone doesn't do too bad.
Regarding the strange accents, as others have said, what about all the films where actors speak in strange American accents? Is that more cool than speaking in an Irish accent? In fact, a lot of the Colin Farrell dialogue is more understandable than a lot of modern American speech.
So, try to approach this in a non-pompous way and just enjoy a good rousing story with a lot of action!

The worst film I have ever seen!By a customer from London , 17 Dec 2008This film is awful. Ridiculous accents, poor performances, silly storylines, far too long ..... I'd give it a miss if I were you!
Directors Cut is worth watchingBy a customer from Stockport , 16 Dec 2008This is the Directors Cut, and is not the cinema release.
I understand the cinema release was awful.
This is a much better film, though at 2 and a half hours long, it does take some work.
Colin Farrell is brilliant as Alexander, he is both magnetic and maniac throughout the feature. It tells the story of Alexander in a compelling way, painting him as a hero, madman, visionary and murderer.
It is very violent in places, and lovers of ancient history will get a kick out of this movie.
It also has some very nasty scenes involving elephants, and plenty of male nudity.
