"My name is Sydney Bristow. Seven years ago I was recruited by a secret branch of the CIA called SD-6. I was sworn to secrecy, but I couldn't keep it from my fiance. And when the head of SD-6 found out, he had him killed. That's when I learned the truth: SD-6 is not part of the CIA. I've been working for the very people I .. Read more

I was unsure about this series at first; there was no doubt it had an engaging plot right from the start and the characters were all well played and the dialogue well written. However it also had a very banal side to it, comprised of the main character's (Sydney Bristow) social circle, who unaware of Sydney's true identity as a CIA agent live out their ordinary lives involved in such mundane activities as school, gossip, weddings, and affairs. There is a stark contrast between the secretive highly dangerous life Sydney leads as an undercover agent, to that of her 'home' life when not on a mission, when we are subjected to the trivial details of her friends social lives. I can only imagine that this was created in order to appeal to a wider audience; those that enjoy spy thrillers, and to those that enjoy soap operas.
Fortunately for the show the good outweighs the bad by a large degree. The action and suspense is brutal and realistic, the plots are convoluted and will keep you guessing all the way. And certainly by disc 4 onwards it seems the writers have a better understanding of their characters and the overall storyline, as things begin to get very interesting and the more mundane characters and aspects of the show thankfully take a back seat.
The primary characters are excellent in each of their roles, and certainly one of the best is Sydney's enstranged father, a cynical verteran CIA agent who keeps everyone at arms length yet obviously is desperate to strengthen ties with his now grown-up daughter. I can only imagine that the 2nd series will get even better.
I've just watched all 22 episodes of the first series over the past two days and frankly it blew me away. How anyone can wait a week between episodes is beyond me.
First, the plot. Conspiracy and intrigue, "X-Files" meets "24" with a helping of 007, twists and turns, a surprise around every corner. The writers must be having a ball with each episode and they keep it coming at a rattling pace.
Garner is superb. The perfect all action, high kicking, fast thinking super spy with a conscience. She trained as a dancer before turning to acting and the training obviously paid off with fight scenes taking on an almost balletic quality. Ans she looks great, no matter what colour her hair. The supporting cast of Rifkin, Varter, Garber et al are outstanding - more of what we've come to expect from US drama in recent years. Special mention must go to Kevin Weisman as Alias' version of 'Q', Genius.
The stunts, the gadgets, the fight sequences all meet the expectations of modern big screen movies. Add to that award winning acting and more gripping plot line than "24" and you've got TV dynamite.
The series made me laugh, cry, cheer, shout at the TV, miss meals, miss sleep, miss a deadline for work and I still crave more.
Rent the whole series, book time off work, pre-order the second series and plan some sick leave for early December.
11/10.
If you liked 24 you'll like this just as much, You've got to take a couple of days of work and just watch every single episode one after the other as you'll be hooked.
Great Series to watch on a Saturday afternoon as it doesn't require to much Brain Power but enjoyable for this...if you never seen this try it, it won't disapoint.

This show has an adolescent target audience. If they are targetting any higher, they have failed miserably. The plots are horribly contrived and unimaginative (sneak around, get stuff, then fight some guys with karate chops). Lame lame lame. Like any series, it might get you addicted, so don't waste your time letting your brain turn to mush with this drivel. Take a preemptive strike and ignore its candy existence.
Yes, Jennifer Garner is very easy on the eye and everyone seems able to act. Beyond that this is tedious rubbish. I expect to suspend disbelief to a degree, but this is ridiculous. They kill the fiance within minutes of finding out (which seems overly harsh), but leave the real security risk running around loose for 3 months? She should never have got out of the building alive after her confrontation with SD-6 CEO Sloane. Then the CIA cheerfully tell a double agent, someone with a proven inability to keep her mouth shut, who has already betrayed her parent organisation, the identity of another double in SD-6. This is not unbelievable, it is just stupid. Bristow comes across as a whiny self-centred brat, constantly demanding special treatment and her smitten handler as an infatuated fool who gives it to her. Clearly the intent was to blind the audience with Garner's supermodel bone structure to hide the inconsistancies in the plot, but despite her stunning looks, she can't save this dog of a show.
If you have never seen this then you are missing out BIG TIME! Alias is absoloutley brilliant with fantastic performances from Jennifer Garner and Micheal Vartan. Jennifer's character Sydney Bristto is a double agent working for the CIA trying to bring down the CIA! Filled to the top with action and fantastic stunts! A great adventure - Havent seen anything like this for ages! Bring on Series 2!
Great and original idea, very well executed, perfect acting all around, a variety of themes, great characters.
A second viewing makes you really appreciate it for all its worth. Garner blew everybody away. Very complex and interesting plot lines. Great music score.
Being an avid viewer of 24, I initially saw this show as one billed for college kids. How wrong I was! This is a fantastic example of gripping TV at it's best. The storylines, the acting and the suspense is top notch and you feel like your watching a Hollywood blockbuster with each episode. I can't rate this highly enough and from what I've heard, the 2nd series is even better. The cliffhangers at the end of each episode merely confirms Alias as being THE top series in it's genre. A word of warning: you WILL be hooked!
Not with a household pet but with thrills and spills. Delicately balances so many strands of a complex story and keeps you guessing right till the fabulous final 2 eppo's.
fantastic cast too.
Suspense, thrills, high octane action, and a gorgeous girl! What more could you ask for in a spy series? I saw it on TV first and loved it just as much the second time around. Jennifer Garner is absolutley amazing in this role as a super double agent. Each episode jumps from country to country following her character Sydney Bristow as she battles to bring down the 'company' who killed her fiance after she told him she was a spy. Superb stuff!
