This stunning modern-day version of the Lewis Carroll story from Czech director, animator and surrealist Jan Svankmajer uses every live action technique in the special effects manual, and contains dashes of startling eroticism. The absurdist universe created by the Prague native plays around liberally with the source material, yet remains remarkably true to its spirit. Flesh-and-blood actress Krystyna Kohoutova stars with a host of scary fish, skeleton birds and, most unusually, perambulating raw meat.
I first saw this film whilst as a student and have loved it ever since. It is what I feel is probably the most reallistic version of the Alice in Wonderland story. Alice is a bored daughter of a taxidermist and becomes obsessed with a stuffed rabbit until she imagines it coming to life. This film brilliantly combines stop motion animation and live action.
Please note that it's not just the subtitles which would put children off this film as some of the scenes could be slightly distrubing for young children but I would thoroughliy recommend this to anyone who likes to see origional filmwork.
Svankmayer, like the other reviewer, was made aware to me by my tutor at college many years ago. After my first viewing I was gripped by the imagination of this man.
Alice in Wonderland or through the looking glass is memorable reading but Svankmayers film takes it to another level entirely. His ability to give everyday objects personalities leaves you wandering if someone spiked your coffee.
Svankmayers other works are just as accomplished as Alice but I would recommend you seeing this first. Even if animation is not your thing it is mesmerising and hypnotic in it's brilliance.
I would advise you to seek professional help in group form prior to watching this film. 'Hello, my name is Merlin and I am about to watch Alice...'. You will surely be sent on your way with a grin and a small glimmer of reality at the end of the animated tunnel.
