  • Aesthetically pleasing, but flawed

You know the story, Woody has told it many times before...a marriage in trouble and the speculation of infidelity. However there's a new twist on it...in order to explore her options Mia Farrow is given magical powers and during these scenes Woody captures moments of genuine beauty and sensitivity. However the main plot is such old ground you feel like you have seen this film before. Mia's performance is also her usual neurotic whingy self. For hardcore Woody fans only

  • Allen doesn't "live" here anymore!

Mid-period Allen, delicately poised between the high quality era of Hannah & her Sisters/Crimes & Misdemeanours and the 1990s slump into mediocrity. Delicately poised not just in time but in standard too. Mia Farrow is given a new perspective on life after turning to a herbalist whose various infusions and concoctions allow her to see others in sercrecy. This then leads to a romance, and comedy ensues. The problem is that the dramatic punch of the situations is weak and so are the laughs. A couple of early lines are excellent but the plot is too whimsical to hold the movie. The performances are fine but this is damning the whole enterprise with faint praise. There are at least a dozen Allen's you should see before this one...and then you need to get out without souring the magic.

  • Quirky, yet ordinary

    Rated - 1.5 stars

'Alice' is undeniably quixotic, yet paradoxically the film manages to be very ordinary and prosaic. The contradiction is intellectually entertaining after the event, but 'Alice' fails to satisfy on several levels. This film is not amusing, is not entertaining, is not educational and is only very mildly dramatic.

I think it's best to avoid this movie, jah?

  • A good story

I enjoyed this film even if it is not one of Woody Allen's best movies. The story of a pampered Upper East Side New Yoirker finding herself (with the help of some magical Chinese herbs) may not be earth shatteringly original but it is entertainingly done. The vanity and greed of the late eighties is well pointed and becomes more evident with the way film ends. Certainly a film to watch on a rainy Sunday afternoon.

Clever, like most Woody Allen films, beautifully acted and directed. I did not like the ending- a bit romantic. But a very pleasant experience. Fun, light watching.

  • Midlife crisis magic

    Rated - 5.0 stars

Not one of 'the early funny ones', but not dripping with angst, this whimsical tale of love and redemption is a favourite (perhaps because I am obsessed with Joe Mantegna).

A New York lady living a lavish but empty life, Mia Farrow is touchingly vulnerable as a wife so drained of confidence that she interprets her deep unhappiness as backache. Then the marvellous Dr Yang lays his hand on her head and heart and tells her: 'Mrs Tate's problem is not back, it is here, and here'. His 'erbs that do everything from rendering her invisible, to summoning ghosts, to causing every man at a Christmas party to declare violent love, after an accident with the eggnog - a vintage Allen scene.

Mantegna smoulders as only he knows how, and Hurt is all slippery blond charm as the patronising husband. All in all, the perfect movie for anyone contemplating a midlife crisis.
