Mid-period Allen, delicately poised between the high quality era of Hannah & her Sisters/Crimes & Misdemeanours and the 1990s slump into mediocrity. Delicately poised not just in time but in standard too. Mia Farrow is given a new perspective on life after turning to a herbalist whose various infusions and concoctions allow her to see others in sercrecy. This then leads to a romance, and comedy ensues. The problem is that the dramatic punch of the situations is weak and so are the laughs. A couple of early lines are excellent but the plot is too whimsical to hold the movie. The performances are fine but this is damning the whole enterprise with faint praise. There are at least a dozen Allen's you should see before this one...and then you need to get out without souring the magic.
