This film doesn't deserve to be spoken in the same breath as the first two. There's too much of the alien on show, the alien seems also have lost a yard of pace and people seem to escape from the thing by simply running away. It does have a grimy industrial look to it but honestly you have to say it's rubbish. Watch no.4 to see the series hit a new low.

If you want to see a gun hoe feel good bug busting movie then move along and don't watch this. If you want a dose of hopelessness, a pinch of depression and a feeling of being doomed from the outset then fill your boots with this one. This film is not as bad as others try to make out. It was always going to be difficult to follow Aliens part 2. Alien 3 is more of a gore-fest than the previous instalments. There is more focus on the actual Alien itself, we get to witness more closely the damage it can do to a human being. Perhaps what we can’t see scares us most and after a while it feels a bit repetitive, another bald prisoner and another hole in the head. It's a grim story, Newt is dead, Ripley has one inside her, they have no weapons, no help from outside, no hope, stuck in a maximum security prison surrounded by rapists and murderers. Ripley herself appears dead inside, emotionaless, she looks like a person who has been through so much grief that nothing else can phase her…a good performance from Weaver again. I liked the idea that the Alien could not kill Ripley as she had one of them inside her – a queen actually and as a result Ripley had a power over the Alien which compensated for having no weapons. I also liked how the prisoners were bounded together by faith and in the end despite their formidable foe found courage to take on the beast without weapons and without much chance of winning.

Alien 3 was always bound to split the fans opinion.

Those who wanted another gun blazing bug hunt would hate it. But you have to take into consideration how the film was butchered in the editing process. Director David Fincher walked off the project in the end and 20th Century cut some of the best bits of the film so way back in 1992 the cinema cut was actually a unfinished project. Having actors with all shaven heads did not help to relate to the characters and parts almost left on the cutting room floor just showed nervious hands at work. Although the cinema cut did have more pace you need to see the extended cut available on the DVD/Blu Ray Quadrilogy. Although on the DVD version the sound in parts is off and distorded, Fincher's brave vision is fully restored on Blu Ray.

ALIEN 3 EXTENDED CUT is a far superior version that flushes the characters out and has plot strands re-inserted including the chest burster coming out of a carcus of an Ox instead of the dog, the alien being captured and then released by Golic (who just disappered in the cinema cut) and a better understanding of Wearvers and Charles Dance's relationship. Even the ending is better with Ripley meeting her fate but without holding onto the infant Queen Alien. The film is sombre and this is to it's benefit as Alien and Aliens offered hope Alien 3 is the bleakest of the series and is the equivalent of a gravestone being pelted with rain as it's stripped away of any optimism. Some didn't like that, but although it's not quite as good as Alien and Aliens it still is a fitting conclusion to what should have been Ripley's swan song, and if you compare it to the terrible Alien Resurrection Alien 3 is a work of genius.

    Alien 3 Cinema Cut ***

    Alien 3 Extended Cut ****1/2

THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS Show review anywayHide

One thing I really love in the Alien Franchise is how the Alien blood is acidic and seems to burn through floors etc!

I had no idea that David Fincher (of Fight Club fame) directed the movie!

Ripley is the sole survivor and I've got to say the computer grahics look really dated!

Those crab like aliens are absolutely terrifying!

    Dr Clements looks familiar.

    'Where is she?'

    - 'She's in the morgue.'

    'I have to see her.'

Its interesting because Ripley seems to be on board some sort of ship with prisoners who have taken a vow of celebacy, (but guess there aren't too many opportunities to meet women in prison!) It will take one week before she is picked up.

'Nothing is certain, only that some get culled, some get saved.'

The first glimpse of an alien we get is nearly 25 minutes in when one bursts out of a dog!

'And now I've made another mistake. - Fratanising with a prisoner.'

She finds part of Bishop the Droid in the wreckage.

Soon after a few of the crew don't seem very effective in fighting the Aliens and come to a nasty ending.

'This is a maximum security prison and you have no weapons of any kind?!'

'I ain't much for begging, nobody ever gave me nothing!'

The CGI portraying the Alien is awful. I wish they hadn't have bothered with it!

'Well what does this f&^*ing beast want?!'

Okay one hour in and I've got to say this is a slow moving film and not much has happened. (Yet in fairness so too are the first two in the series and Aliens is a good movie).

Its obvious that as the film progresses Ripley has got an Alien inside of her, (due to all the pain she is enduring!)

    'What does it look like?!'

    - 'Horrible!'

'Don't be afraid, I'm part of the family!'

'You've been in my life so long, I can't remember anything else.'

Ripley has to help in the fight against the Alien because another member of the crew refuses to kill her, (due the Alien inside of her).

'You're all gonna die, the only question is how.'

The whole end sequence is quite good and redeems the film somewhat. (They pour a load of lead on the Alien basically).

'What guarantee do I have once you have taken it out you will destroy it?'

    - 'You have to trust me.'

The end is sad and it ends Ripley's association with the Alien Franchise.

This sequel is a little weaker than Aliens, but will still give you plenty of shocks and suspense to keep you on the edge of your seat. I would have expected though a little more action sequences than we got but overall, still a good film to watch. The casting is excellent with Ms Weaver still proving that she can deliver. All in all, from a personal point of view, it's one I would certainly consider buying from a retailer!

It's not quite on the same level as the first two films but Alien 3 still packs a punch.

Going back to the original Alien film with a theme of one predator stalking our 'heroes', in this case we've got Ripley, once again, and the various rag-tag inhabitants of a prision planet.

Brian Glover, Charles Dance, Paul McGann and Pete Postlethwaite are among the English heavy cast on the menu for the killer alien this time round.

Great claustrophobic fun in the classic Alien style, but this probably should have been the last of Sigourney Weaver's Alien outings.
