something he ate?

It's easy to forget how the Alien series began, what with the lamentable Alien Ressurection and deeply flawed Alien3 following the big budget carnage of Aliens. This movie is a finely crafted exercise in suspense, favouring slow build-ups to crash-bang progression, while not forgetting to provide the occasional jolt to keep the audience on the edge of their seats.
Sigourney Weaver was revelatory as Ripley, creating an iconic heroine in the process. Easily a match was the stunning set and creature design; Geiger's monsters in particular seem to resonate with everyone who sees them, and it's hard not to have a strong reaction to the appearances of each consecutive 'stage' of monster.
It's easy to overlook the rest of the cast, and the wonderfully realised dynamic they create, with John Hurt, Yaphet Kotto and most notably Ian Holm all delivering excellent performances which contribute to some of the film's strongest scenes.
The only grumbles i'd have would be a relatively weak ending which seems to highlight possible budgetary restraints, and the unavoidable fact that the more you see of the Alien, the less scary it becomes. Which only goes to show, the strength of this film lies in is taut camerawork and direction, showing that what you don't see is often what scares you the most.- Was this review helpful to you?

(85)Nasty Chest Cough you got there !
By Cacs (3 reviews) , 19 May 2013I enjoyed Ridley Scott's first Alien movie. Its hard to believe it was released way back in 1979, 34 years ago. The film could easily have been released 4 years ago its that good. There are parts of the movie that do look a bit outdated though, the computers within the Cargo Carrier 'The Nostromo' remind me of the old Commador 64 I use to have as a kid and certainly the actual Alien itself looks a bit suspect in certain scenes - like a man in a monster suit. However its a real gritty 70's movie, dark and eerie from the start and protrays the loneliness of space perfectly. The movie is of slow pace but this does not take anything away from the film but adds to the suspense of it all. Good movie overall...a great start to the Alien franchise- Was this review helpful to you?

Scary and suspenseful
By a customer , 31 Mar 2012Many of the 'classics' that one is urged to watch are poor in quality (cf. Blade Runner, Solaris, The Rocky Horror Picture Show), so I was pleasantly surprised that this film was actually enjoyable. The pace built throughout the film; the tension was gripping, particularly in the third act; the alien was actually scary (unlike many 'monsters' seen in films both old and new). It may not be the most intelligent film ever, but it is certainly entertaining.- Was this review helpful to you?

Still One Of The Best Ever
By delmeister (3 reviews) , 18 Mar 2012If you haven't seen this, where have you been? This is an astonishing movie that moved the si-fi genre forward in the same way Saving Private Ryan changed war movies. Stunning scenes, great story, excellent acting and the ultimate alien. This is a must see...and you don't have to be a sci-fi fan to enjoy it, great thriller.- Was this review helpful to you?

Good in it's day but dated
By mikeswan (11 reviews) , 13 Feb 2012This was a good film in 1979 but it looks very old now in 2012. The whole look of the film is now dated looks a bit like a 1990s computer game. Watch it for an old classic, but one that has not aged well. Some of the acting very good like the lead girl, others a bit cardboard.- Was this review helpful to you?
