    American History Made Easy

In friendly conversational style Alistair Cooke, in his prime, relates a history of the U.S.A. He covers the broad sweep with concise acounts backed by well-chosen archive pictures and specially shot footage - the helicopter shots are stunning. He adds anecdotes and appreciations of individuals he particularly admires. The 'additional material' adds little to the 1972 production. The 4 dvds run for about 13hours, but it seems much less, it is so absorbing.

I like to be in Alistair Cooke's America

In many respects an old-fashioned epic documentary - no toytown re-enactments, no thesps emoting old letters to camera, no CGI effects of 'how it used to look' - just a man who knows what he's talking about and camerawork that captures the sweep and scale of US history. If you want to know where America has come from and why it is the way that it is you must see this series of documentaries.
