Many passengers are killed on contact, but most people survive--with only enough rations for a short time. Given the harsh climate and lack of food, the survivors are forced to take drastic measures to stay alive. When they learn through their transistor radio that the search effort for their plane has been aborted, three young men (played by Ethan Hawke, Vincent Spano, and Josh Hamilton) attempt to cross the Andes in search of civilization.

This harrowing drama is based on the true story of a South American rugby team whose plane crash-landed in the Andes in 1972, leaving the survivors the choice of starving to death or eating their dead to stay alive. Director Frank Marshall stages the mountaintop crash with a terrifying sequence of special effects and makes sure that the subsequent events are tastefully presented. He's well served by the convincing performances of a cast that includes Ethan Hawke and Vincent Spano. However, given the grim subject matter, you can't help but keep your emotional distance from the survivors' dreadful dilemma.

    Alive - 1993 **** / ***** (4/5)

    Alive made in 1993.

This DVD is an old one, but also a good one. A great story and it all happened, based on a true story. Basically a rugby team are on there way across mountains, suddenly the unexpected happens, breathtaking, as the two pilots try and bring the plane above a ridiculasly tall mountain, do the manage it....? and if not, what happens to the survivers, or are there any... HIRE THIS FILM ITS GREAT FOR THE YEAR 1999! I RATEE IT 4/5

    Very powerful and moving film

After watching this very powerful and moving film you realise just how much you take for granted just being alive, let alone having a steady job and a roof over your head.

The performances all round are fantastic, you really feel the character's pain & suffering as they struggle to stay alive on the side of a freezing Andes' mountain. Although the ending is less intense than the rest of the film it still wraps up a very memorable viewing experience well.

Recommended, but don't except it to be a comfortable ride!

What happened between Father Flynn (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and Donald Miller (Joseph Foster) in the rectory? Neither one is saying, but Sister James (Amy Adams) is concerned the boy came back to class flushed, with alcohol on his breath. Sister James is young and naïve, but not that naïve. She hesitantly takes her suspicion to Sister Aloysius (Meryl Streep), the principal at St Mary’s. Sister Aloysius is neither young nor naïve, and unlike Sister James, she has taken a staunch dislike... Read more
