All Over Me

ALL OVER ME is an intense, naturalistic portrait of a changing friendship between two teenage girls, set in New York's gritty Hell's Kitchen. The symbiotic, loving relationship between riot-grrrl teens Ellen (Tara Subkoff) and Claude (Alison Folland) degrades after Ellen begins dating a rough-hewn, mean-spirited older boy, and Claude tries on a lesbian identity with the help of a new gay male friend. The film is suffused with alternative music-scene bit parts and cameos, including Leisha Hailey (of the Murmurs) and Mary Timony (of Helium).

A haunting, uncompromising snapshot of urban adolescent life, this exceptional debut never gained the same exposure as the similarly themed Kids, but packs the same raw power to shock. Written and directed (respectively) by Sylvia and Alex Sichel, the film offers a portrait of two teenage girls: Tara Subkoff is hopelessly in love with drug-taking loser Cole Hauser, while Alison Folland is struggling to come to terms with her own sexuality. A brutal murder in their neighbourhood puts the two friends on a collision course. The cast of unknowns is uniformly superb and the brutally frank script and vivid cinematography help create a troubled vision of modern American life.

I must admit I didn't have particularly high expectations of this film. Probably because there are a lot of mediocre films out there that would be placed, rightly or wrongly in the so-called 'gay/lesbian' genre. There are also a lot of incredibly good ones and this movie falls into that category. It's one of the most involving 'teen' films i've seen in a long time. But don't let my use of the t-word put you off - the fact that the two main characters are in their mid-teens is not the issue - life, relationships and prejudice are.

Not great acting, puts several issues out there but doesnt really progress them, many times you are just sat there waiting for something to happen or the camera to cut to the next scene.

And yet when it finished I couldnt stop thinking about the film and how much I'd enjoyed it.
