Opening in an STD clinic (thought they were just for real people) sets the tone for this cod piece about two men, Dan Bucatinsky and Richard Ruccolo, looking for love as opposed to endless one night stands. Thrown together by mutual mates Sasha Alexander and Adam Goldberg, they are not obvious contenders for happily-ever-after (Ruccolo is a commitment phobe and Bucatinsky wants the wedding dress). While they muddle on, Alexander and Goldberg start successfully simmering over the dating fire. Adapted from Bucatinsky's play and directed by him, this is cute material. Nothing new but the comedic talents of Goldberg and Bucatinsky do see you through.
I review gay movies on my own website, and have seen dozens, so I can assure you that this is the best gay movie you are likely to see. The acting is first-class throughout and it's a 'proper' mainstream movie with the most sparkling script and amusing plot. Think Latter Days with even better writing and acting.
The dialogue is so quick-fire that it's almost like listening to stand-up comedy, and you can tell that the film came from a solid stage-play. The soundtrack to the film is excellent and really captures the mood of the ups and downs of the love story between Tom and Eli. I finsished watching this late last night and I can't wait to watch it again tonight. This is seriously the gay film we've all been waiting for. May it be the first of many.
