All That Jazz

Bob Fosse's semi-autobiographical film celebrates show business stripped of glamour or giddy illusions. Joe Gideon (Roy Scheider) is at the top of the heap, one of the most successful directors and choreographers in musical theatre. But he can feel his world slowly collapsing around him: His obsession with work has almost destroyed his personal life, and only his bottles of pills keep him going. As he struggles to right his relationships with his ex-wife, his lover, and his daughter, he also has to cope with his failing health. Soon it's clear he'll have to make a choice: his art--or his life. A talented director and choreographer of both film and stage, Fosse was perhaps best known for helming the film version of CABARET and creating the musical CHICAGO.

Director Bob Fosse's musical, which largely mirrors his own real-life experiences, is memorable for a blistering performance by Roy Scheider in the lead role. The star was nominated for an Oscar in this tale of a choreographer who drives his dancers and himself to the limit in preparation for a new musical. Scheider's character suffers a heart attack, leading him to hallucinate some wild musical numbers, which are superbly shot. Some may argue that Fosse's film is flashily self-indulgent, but it was deservedly a critical (it won Oscars for editing, score, art direction and costume design) and box-office success.

Self-indulgent, semi-autobiographical tragi-comic extravaganza complete with heart operations and a recurring angel of death. Flashes of brilliant talent make it a must for Fosse fans.

    Musical masterpiece

Despite winning a pile of Academy Awards, it took a year for this to get a decent release outside London.

    The wait was worth it.

A stunning self-examination by a genius of the musical, made even more raw by using several of his real life partners in the film.

Bob Fosse was at the top of his career. He'd won everything except the FA Cup for Cabaret. He was editing his next film (Lenny), directing a new musical from the duo responsible for Cabaret (Chicago) featuring his ex-wife, while living with his new live-in partner... and having numerous other affairs.

Then he had a heart attack.

It's all there in the film. Only the names have been changed. Well, nearly.

Throw in some stunning musical numbers - but as in Cabaret, no-one just bursts into song - and you have a masterpiece.

    Great

One of the most insightful dance films that exists. Great film, great dancing sequences, lots of undercurrents.

For those that don't understand it: you have not lived yet, not enough to understand life and death anyway!
