The film has so many good actors and the main reason for watching this was for sean penn who is such a good actor and he definitely makes the film better than it could have been. Jude Law is very good too. It is just a shame the film did not have a good editor working on the script and the length of the film too
Sean Penn is a fine actor (and even better director). That out of the way, this was a very difficult film to get through. Penn was superb in a few spots, but he just couldn't seem to stay focused on that accent in any scene where he wasn't making an impassioned speech. Jude Law...wow, could the producers not find someone capable of playing an intelligent Southerner? His accent was miles off the mark. The fact is, none of the men in this film did a good job of it, with the exception of Anthony Hopkins who (wisely) chose to just sound refined and educated. I suppose I was more annoyed with all this than anything else. The script, on the other hand, was unforgivable. It just didn't hang together. Read the book instead--it's outstanding.
