A vicious alligator named Ramon, who was flushed into the city sewer as a baby, survives to become a 32-foot-long menace who devours animals and people alike. Ramon's so huge because of the steady diet of dead pets - treated with growth hormones - that he's fed on for 12 years. Now the tremendous brute is angry and looking for .. Read more

The old urban myth about baby alligators thriving in city sewers after being discarded as pets inspires this turbo-driven eco-chiller, thanks to the genuine wit and sardonic wisdom of John Sayles's superb script. Just as he did with Piranha and The Howling (written with Terence H Winkless), Sayles crafts a monster-on-the-loose scenario that's better than the best of the 1950s movies it resembles. The cast (especially tough detective Robert Forster) is highly believable and treats the in-jokes with the right amount of tongue-in-cheek deference. Cujo director Lewis Teague brings subtle irony to the carnage and infuses the whole radical re-packaging of mutant monster clichés with an immensely likeable sense of insolent fun.

Jaws-type monster movie made tolerable by occasional flashes of humour but not otherwise remarkable.

Ever had an alligator crash a wedding?

This is still as great today as it was then. The definite monster movie. I got this the other day on DVD and I couldn't believe how gory it was. It didn't look like that the last time I saw it and slightly scary too.

It was good to have a trip down memory lane and get to enjoy this movie again.

The special effects don't look dated at all; in fact they look better than the usual CGI effects that you see nowadays.

I loved to see a real good sequel to this set in the millennium.

With a great star cast in it too. Robert Forster is great as the cop in charge of eliminating the sharp toothed threat.

Just remember this don't flush anything down the toilet that doesn't belong there.

    Great

I liked this film that much that I brought it and I still watch it now.

It has some funny parts but also some good action too. I don't find it a boring film even after seeing it so many times.

    Bite Me!

Switch off the brain cells and enjoy. It's very much of it's time with Robert Foster playing the lead with his tongue firmly in his cheek. And there's even a cameo from one of cinema's most notorious hams, Henry Silva! What more could you ask for?

    Late night entertainment

Great for late night viewing when you are a bit tired and want something undemanding. Given the budget and acting limitations of the film and the few extras on the disk, would have it been too much trouble to at least present it in widescreen than standard 4:3 ratio?

    Classics are always the best

Classic all time great. Lots of blood and gore. About a baby alligator that gets flushed down a toilet then grows in to an over grown reptile that takes over the sewers killing and eating anything that stands before it. If you dont like any thing thats in this review this IS NOT FOR YOU! BE WARNED!

    Toothless

I remember this film being great when I was a kid, however, it has aged quite badly and is not up to much really.

It is ok, but that is about it.

    Cheap and Cheerful!

Well, I quite enjoyed it anyway. Ok, so it's a tacky piece of hokum, and your sense of reality most definitely needs to be switched off but Alligator is a nice, tidy little 80's monster movie. The effects aren't too shoddy for once - ok the plot is way too predictable, and you can quite easily guess who's next to be chomped, but that's the point of a film like this isn't it?

All in all, it makes for an enjoyable Saturday night viewing with a few drinks and snacks. Just remember if monster movies aren't your thing, then don't go there! Stick with your Swedish Arthouse philosophical ramblings about love, death and your mother....

    soooo embarassingly bad.

I rented this for the kids sake but even they weren't remotely scared by the big rubber gator - they actually had a great laugh! The script was as cheesy as your mamma's macaroni and the romantic storyline was one of the worst in movie history.in some parts it was that bad that it was actually good. was there a sequel you ask?
