A disappearing art
By a customer from Molesey, Surrey , 23 May 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
There are few string quartets that were as 'long-lived' as the Amadeus without a change of personnel, and in this fine collection of their performances there is a perfect opportunity to witness the results that such a long acquaintanceship can bring - both for good and not-so-good.
I have no problem with the style, which was essentially echt-Viennese with all that entailed - a romanticism which sits a mite uneasily on ears accustomed to present-day styles in Mozart performance, but offers huge benefits in Schubert, Brahms, Schumann and, dare one say it, in Britten?
The performances here were recorded in monochrome, but one loses nothing in appreciation of the music as the sound is more than adequate and the camera work unobtrusive.
Something of a historical document then, but offering rich rewards to those who can open their ears (and musical hearts!) to a style of yesteryear.- Was this review helpful to you?

(3)Fine Beethoven by a renowned Quartet.
By a customer from Hampshire, England. , 06 Jun 2006I enjoyed the two Beethoven String Quartets. Perhaps not so much the Mozart but that was my fault. Half the pleasure was watching the players; all characters. The masterful leader, the nervous-looking second violin, the rather fragile Viola player and the very competent Cellist. Then I looked up their history and that was even more interesting. The three older players--not the cellist I think-- were refugees from Germany. They have been playing and delighting audiences here for thirty nine years. Presumably all of that time the second violin has looked doubtful, as if afraid of getting the sack after the performance. Sadly the quartet gave up when the viola player died.
I recommend the DVD to all who enjoy string quartets.- Was this review helpful to you?

Short snippets suffice-put on your LP instead
By Myword from Perthshire , 15 Jan 2006This is a serious disappointment. The sound is muffled and distorted and the picture - black and white in the Mozart- almost completely static. It ought to be interesting to see one of the great quartets of the 20th Century performing at their peak. But with this production small snippets to give a taster will suffice. Dig out your old LPs to hear the great music they produced invery good stereo - or get some cd's - though there are now other quartets giving marvellously revealing performances in first class digital sound.- Was this review helpful to you?
