The only saving grace of this film is its length. It's short. The acting and directing are third-rate. I used the fast forward button on triple speed from about 30 minutes in and did not miss the plot. In spite of this, something of the dehumanisation of slaves and the horror of their kidnap, entrapment, fear and abuse is captured in the film, though many of the actors are a little too well fed and content to be convincingly emancipated. The warm humanity of the slaves eventually wins-over a newly converted, partially reformed John Newton. I read the biography of Newton a number of years ago. The film left me wanting to read the book again to check the doubtful historical accuracy of the film.
