    [Highly rated reviewer]

Unconvincing and unmoving war drama that contains no themes other than what we already know: War is hell. The performances are lackluster, the plotting pedestrian and the politics of the Finnish invasion of the USSR in 1941 largely unexplored. The combat scenes are well mounted - and the leading nurse fetching - but these are not enough to engage our emotions in a nation’s struggle for self-determination and in the struggle to create a fulfilling sexual relationship. Like Saving Private Ryan (1998), this is not really about anything much at all other than good old blood and guts.

I WATCHED THIS ON INSTANT. I AM SO GLAD I DID NOT WASTE A RENTAL ON THIS.

WHEN I SAY I WATCHED IT, I ONLY MANAGED TO WATCH ABOUT 40 MINS OF IT.

    DULL, BORING, AND POINTLESS FILM.

I DONT NORMALY MIND SUBTITLED FILMS IF THEY ACTUALLY HAVE A STORY LINE, GOT PUT OFF THE FILM AS WELL BY THE HORRIFIC SIGHT OF NAKED MEN, ANY OPPORTUNITY TO GET THEIR CLOTHS OFF. NASTY !

  • Slow pace but good story

Finnish film with subtitles. If you liked Winter War then you will like this. Although it is a little slow in places and some scenes are too drawn out it still makes a reasonable war movie. One appreciates those soldiers who cycled to war.The better films in this war genre are The Dawn is Quiet Here and Star.

  • Utterly Underwhelming War Film

Ambush 1941 is a flat feeling and overly long Finnish take on the war movie. The Finns, led by quasi Fascist Marshal Mannerheim, managed to be attacked by the USSR at the start of the war and so ended up joining the German Blitzkrieg to get their own back in 1941. This means that any attempt at a Finnish war movie has got more than a little explaining to do. The trouble here is that proceedings are reduced to a gung ho list of formulaic set pieces which are padded out with about an hour and twenty minutes worth of fifteen men on bicycles in a pine forest. That leaves about half an hour for the action. Totally devoid of emotion, wit, characterisation or exploration of context, this is the one of the worst and most plodding and shallow war movies of all time. This is to be avoided at all costs by anyone other than the dullest of Finnish ultra nationalist apologists.
