I have always been fascinated by the Amelia Earhart story, and this film is centred around Amelia Earhart's ill-fated attempt to fly around the world in 1937 with flashbacks to her introduction to flying and her burst into worldwide fame. It starts from her early years when Amelia was captivated by the sight of an aircraft flying overhead on the Kansas prairie where she grew up, her life over the preceding decade is gradually unfolded in her quest to be able to fly free as a bird above the clouds.

Richard Gere plays publisher George Putnam who promoted her flights and became her very understanding husband.

Amelia falls into an awkward love affair with pilot and future Federal aviation administrator Gene Vidal during the course of the film who is played superbly by Ewan McGregor.

Very much her own woman, Amelia Earhart not only paved the way for female aviators but helped drive the development of aviation at large.

In the process, she became one of the first celebrities to create a major marketing bandwagon with her name slapped on many household products.

The business of flying in those days was very dangerous and the film does a good job of creating suspense during Amelia Earhart's last flight. Christopher Eccleston is great as her navigator Fred Noonan.

    Well worth watching !!

This is a nicely filmed period biography, with a stellar cast, that due to its subject matter and feisty heroine should have been so much better. It is very slow and episodic and I found my attention wandering throughout.

I found this film quite boring unfortunately. I expected it to be really good so I think that's why I was so disappointed.

I was so bored that I had to watch it twice because I fell asleep the first time through!

I enjoyed the portrayal of the historical part of the story and the feisty women though.

I would really have loved to love this film. Faithful treatment with quality cast and fine filming about an extraordinary woman, but in the end long distance flying is just as boring when done by a heroine it would seem.

This was a non-starter from the off. If you are interested in old aircraft, trail-blazers, air pioneers etc then get yourself a good book instead - this film wont do it for you

I just love true stories and this did not disappoint. Hilary Swank was brill as Amelia and even looked like her. Very entertaining. It was also good to see the real Amelia footage at the end of film. Well worth a watch.
