    [Highly rated reviewer]

Wonderful footage of steam railways - some of it as far back as 1902. Some of the chapters a bit too full of technical details but worth watching all the same.

This didn't go from the first chapter straight through as some films like this do but kept going back to the menu after each chapter. Therefore it was easy to stop it and watch later rather than watching all in one go.

One chapter was about the Last Spike - the joining of the railway line from the west with the one from the east to make the trans-continental railway . Remarkable feat of engineering

This series of DVDs contain copies of mainly promotional films made by the railway companies. This usually means that pictures of motive power are somewhat fleeting, with the concentration being on freight handling, passenger comfort and general safety. These include the Nickel Plate Road, Norfolk and Western (good), and the New York Central.

One surprise extra, for me, was a film about one of the last steam worked logging operations in Washington state (Rayonair at Grays Harbor) as they changed from steam to diesel in the 1960s.

There are other scenes worth viewing, I found that by initially fast forwarding through the films I could pick out the ones that were of interest to me, then watch them at normal speed.

An interesting collection of films, mostly from the 1950s or earlier. Some are colour, some black & white. Some are very old and jittery and a bit hard on the eyes. All are worth watching, some several times. This is a good series that would be better if it didn't have an 'expert' trying to explain everything.

If like me you`re into Model Railroading then this is a disc not to be missed. Lots of very interesting archive footage only let down by poor sound quality which is to be expected with historical film(s) some of which were very old. Good introduction by one of Americas top railway historians who clearly knows his stuff even though you could see him reading the autoQ. I`m looking forward now to seeing the other two discs.

Just to add to my earlier review. Disc 2 was a wee bit didactic. Interesting footage of train disasters of the 1920's.
