Sunday Afternoon Film!By cocode36 from Leicestershire , 30 Apr 2006
[Highly rated reviewer]I went to watch this film at the cinema and expected a lot more than was delivered. I should of thought something was unusual when there was only 4 people in this screenings. (including myself).
There was very few funnny parts, and just had a lackluster storyline. Hugh Grant plays the producer/presenter/only judge and is a mean guy (The supposed "Simon" character). To be blunt, its the worst Hugh Grant film i've ever seen. The elimination stages progress and the final 2 are Mandy Moore and an Iraqi who is being taught by his 'camp' cousin how to sing and dance. The president is a special guest judge in order to help his 'PR' after falling into isolation with books and newspapers. The Iraqi is being told by his 'brothers' back in Iraq to blow up the President on the finale.
All in all, its the sort of film you would watch if nothing else was on TV on a Sunday Afternoon after dinner. You'd fall asleep half way through and wake up not really caring what happened at the end!

It's not great...By a customer from Lincoln , 19 Feb 2009... but I didn't totally dislike it! Thought the Hugh Grant was a great sleazeball.
American Dreamz - What a waste of timeBy DaveFromBlandford (1 review) from Blandford Forum , 07 Feb 2009Do not rent - This is the worst film I have ever seen! Not funny, Poor Acting, Waste of time...and I usually love Hugh Grant films...a real disappointment.
Painful - do not waste a rental list slotBy a customer from Aberdeen , 12 Nov 2008Worst film in years... Even worse than Borat
Watching this movie hurt me so much that it made me write a review, which I do when something is very good or really bad. I will include a few ideas to improve this film (seriously):
-One of your characters can be a president in need of a popularity boost, but please, do not make it a Prozac consumer with a nervous breakdown.
-One of your main characters might be a B**CH willing to do anything to get what she wants, but make it credible. Even Cruella De Vil got some heart.
-I do not like X factor/American Idol-like shows, but the people who make it to the final can at least sing and dance better than I do. Not like the Iraq contestant.
-If you plan to include a terrorist camp making footage of their training, please make it look like they are making footage and not a Hollywood blockbuster - forget the sound technician, it does not make it credible.
-You can use the estranged boyfriend/disposable war hero character, but please do not make it a d*mb*ss.
-The camp cousin is just not funny. Really.
This movie is bad as rom com, chick flick, satire and anything else. I believe that they tried to do something similar to what Ben Stiller and the Farreli Brothers do when they make a film together, but it turned awfully bad. And I do not like Stiller/Farreli films.
SOme good stuff but pretty average overallBy a customer from London , 29 Oct 2008SOme stuff were funny specially how they portrayed the President, for the rest the story was quite bland.
American DreamzBy jimski (37 reviews) from Corwen , 13 Sep 2008I started watching this film with some reserve as Hugh Grant films can be hit and miss. However it was pretty good especially as it was an American film and they usually cannot do satire. It was cynical all through although unlike the best satires the characters had redeeming features which lets them off the hook. They couldn't resist letting the president off in the end. Don't worry that doesn't give the end away.
