Dated but good
By Simon from England , 28 Jul 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
American Gigolo was slightly dated but nether the less a great script from paul schrader the writer of such classics as raging Bull and Taxi Driver. It is very intriguing to watch cause its not often you get to see a film with the anti hero being a gigolo. For some reason in another way it is very undated because it has a very 80s feal to it similar to American Psycho but the thing with this it is for real. I would recommend watching the film as long as you are willing to just laugh off Richard Gere's terrible acting.- Was this review helpful to you?

(15)Dated, slightly shallow but surprisingly watchable
By Bassman71 (618 reviews) from Didsbury, England , 11 Sep 2012Male escort, makes living discreetly with rich, older, married women, does friend favour, tragedy, gets framed.
Dated, slightly shallow but surprisingly watchable early 80s thriller with Richard Gere looking fantastic despite his acting being a bit off at times and good support from the lovely Lauren Hutton and Hector Elizondo.
It does have a certain swagger about it and I certainly think it influenced Nicolas Winding Refns Drive in places although the ending is a little flat.
Some great incidental music from Giorgio Moroder and a memorable theme from Blondie.- Was this review helpful to you?

A dated tale of alienation.
By Kowalski (38 reviews) , 05 Feb 2012I wanted to watch this film solely because it was written and directed by Paul Schrader, and in terms of his familiar themes of alienation and isolation it doesn't disappoint. I do think, though, that on this evidence, Schrader is a better writer than he is a director. The look of the film is very of its time and would undoubtebly have been very stylish, but thirty years later it looks almost like a parody of the style it examplifies - much like Michael Mann films of this era.
I wasn't a fan of Richard Gere before this film and neither am I now, and I found his performance lacking in the charisma that Julian would have had in spades. I would go so far as to say that a better lead would have improved the film considerably. Having said that, his performance isn't overshadowed by anybody else in the film and I would say nobody stands out particularly.
What I did like about this film was the satirical look at the shallow and materialistic lives of these characters, none more so than Julian. As the plot unravels he becomes little more than a commodity himself, with the fakery and lack of substance of his seemingly idealistic existence revealing its inherent malice.- Was this review helpful to you?

The movie that made Richard Gere a heart throb!
By a customer , 10 Dec 2011A light-hearted take on a dark theme. This romance/thriller featuring Richard Gere as the anti-hero is probably the movie where Richard Gere looked his best. I grew up in the late 80s and never fully understood Richard Gere's appeal until I watched this movie and boy, I must say Richard Gere is one of the most handsome actor that has graced our screens. I love the charisma he brings about in the movie, and the swagger in his walk - if only men today seek some inspiration from him! (sense of fashion, not choice of career)
There is something very Patrick Bateman about Julian Kay. Or probably it works the other way round. I wouldn't be surprised if Christian Bale sourced for some inspiration from Julian Kay for his American Psycho's role.
The script is excellent too. Sharply written with a dry sense of humour, it keeps the movie grounded throughout. However, that's pretty much where the merits of the movie end. I thought the production quality wasn't that good. Although it had a great soundtrack, the music was unnecessarily loud and the dialogue was too soft to be audible. The execution of bedroom scenes (the one between Richard Gere and Lauren Hutton) was uneven and tacky. Also the movie failed to build a connection with the audience. I don't seem to connect emotionally with any characters as the story does not fully develop them beyond their superficial self.
That said, its still a nice movie to fill one of those nights in and watching the dashingly handsome Richard Gere is entertainment in itself already.- Was this review helpful to you?
