  • Fantastic acting, but ultimately a mess

    [Highly rated reviewer]

I'll watch anything with Ed Norton in it, and once again he doesn't disappoint. He's utterly brilliant as the bitter son of a fireman murdered in the course of duty - by a black man.

This movie is wonderful to look at: hardly surprising, considering it was directed by Tony 'Guiness adverts' Kaye.

Of course, the problems with the movie caused international headlines, when Ed Norton took away final cut from Mr Kaye.

First time I watched this, the acting and the look blew me away. But on second viewing you realise it's intellectually threadbare. The third act, where Norton is saved from a future as a white supremacist by a wise, funny and hideously cliched black saint is laughable.

Why is it so laughable? Well, the Norton character is an *intellectual* Nazi. He's not a thug, he's a political philosopher, and a very articulate one at that. For my money, the only thing that could change his mind would be intellectual argument and hard evidence. Instead, he becomes a born-again liberal just because someone from a different ethnic group is kind to him. Sorry, but in the context of the first two acts, that doesn't hold water.

Still, it's definitely worth watching, for the acting alone; and it's a good movie in that it provokes debate afterward. Provided you watch it with friends, of course...

  • You MUST watch this film

This film is by far one of my most favourite, I have watched it countless times and will undoubtedly watch it many more. The film is gripping from beginning to end. Agreed that some scenes are not pleasant, but the content of these scenes is true to the story and therefore necessary to the entire feel of the film. Edward Norton is amazing, but he has set the bar high for himself and I often feel disappointed by his performance in other films as a result.

I really enjoyed this film. I'm not usually a Norton fan. I really disliked Fight Club but I was open to see Norton in a different role. And WOW! I'm not saying he carries this film, Furlong does do a lot. But Norton is brilliant in it. He's charismatic enough to even inspire the audience into joining him. Also, Norton isn't playing just one role. He basically plays two different people and does it brilliantly. Although you may not be into these sort of films, everyone should have this in their DVD collection. Yes at times it is hard to watch, for example the famous curb stomp scene, but that's the ride that cinema can take you on. Overall, this was a brilliant film. I didn't think it would impress me as I was such a non-believer in Norton, but this film made me rethink. NORTON IS A BADASS.

  • The only good thing was Norton's acting.

I rented this film because my boyfriend said it was a really good story. It wasn't. The storyline it's self seemed like it would be good in theory but was messy & badly executed. The racism didn't bother me in a beginning because it was the characters that were racist & not the film, however it didn't take long until most of what was said or what was happening was just not necessary. We got that it was gritty & the characters were theses horrible ignorant people without a lot of things that happened. It was as if they were deliberately trying to make the viewer as uncomfortable & offended as possible. I know a lot of people will disagree & argue that it is all vital to building the characters & what not but honestly I just turned it off. Don't get me wrong, Edward Norton was fantastic, as were most of the other actors but the story was pointlessly offensive & dragged out to the point where it was dull. I'm not particularly surprised the director disowned it.

One of the best films of all time in my view. Rented this not knowing what it was going to be like but was then left telling everyone to rent this incredible film. Edward Norton is pure quality as a neo nazi. Go rent and enjoy.
