Patrick Bateman is young, white, beautiful, ivy leagued, and indistinguishable from his Wall Street colleagues. Shielded by conformity, privilege, and wealth, Bateman is also the ultimate serial killer, roaming freely and fearlessly. His murderous impulses are fueled by zealous materialism and piercing envy when he discovers .. Read more

Director Mary Harron fought tooth and nail for Christian Bale to play Bret Easton Ellis's smooth yuppie killer (Leonardo DiCaprio was the studio's choice), and her decision is totally vindicated in this dark comedy drama. Bale is brilliant, boasting a flawless American accent and an impressively sculptured physique as the wealthy, successful and psychotic Patrick Bateman. Despite the novel's skin-crawling reputation, most of the violence takes place off-screen. Moreover, the film's satirical swipes at the materialistic 1980s provide laughs amid the carnage, as does Bale's cheesy, game-show host delivery of Bateman's eccentric cultural observations. Aside from a graphic threesome, this is an admirably restrained adaptation, although its cold, aloof tone somehow lessens the impact of Bateman's actions.

A deft, elegant portrait of a self-obsessed, fashionable, design-conscious man descending into psychosis as a result of his obsessions.

    Don't touch the watch.

Have you ever had one of those days where the whole world seems to be against you and you could quite quite easily go mad to the point of ramming everyone the cuts you up on the way home ? This is for you. Excellent acting, great plot, and good camerawork make this film highly enjoyable. It'll have you in stitches and there are some very memorable scenes and quotes that you will involuntarily recall for days afterwards. A truly classic comedy horror. Now, I have to go and return some video tapes.....

You will never look at sussudio in the same way again!!!

I watched this film expecting another slasher movie, this film is funny with several scenes sticking in my mind. Down to flexing into the mirror with the ladies of the night to sussudio, to running out of his flat in the buff with a chainsaw, there will be plenty of momnents that stick in your mind.

The lead is played down to a tea with plenty of witty jokes and tounge in cheek murders and gore.

    Awesome

    This is not an exit

Without the obviously unfilmable hungry rat scenario and a few other scenes, this film is a great book adaptation.

Christian Bale is amazing (Welsh may I add) capturing the character of Patrik Bateman perfectly. Leo di Caprio who??? The whole feel of the film is loyal to the book, but still captures the essence of watching something new.

This film is from start to finish excellent!

    Hmmmm

I have recently read the book and found it very disturbing, but also with elements of great humour. The film doesnt really hit the humour - other than perhaps when he puts on the waterproof coat... you will know what i mean when you see the scene. But the film is definitely more palatable than the book in the animal cruelty area. Possibly worth watching (bale is very good in the role for sure) but not brilliant

    OK

Christian Bale is a favourite actor of mine so I was keen to watch this film. Its quite gory in some places, even for me, and I found it difficult to watch. Was a little confused about when and where things were happening but the story was pretty much to do with this guy who didn't seem to do a great deal exept carve people up as a hobby.

Love to have seen his 'things to do' list !

A great film - Dark, violent, but funny

A great film, which is both interesting and strange (you are not sure what is reality and what is in Patrick Bateman’s mind). The movie has a good cast, with Christian Bale puts on a career making and career best performance as Patrick Bateman, while the rest of the cast all put in good performances as well. Dark, violent (even though the violence and killings take place off-screen), but also funny, you can see why American Psycho became and still is a cult classic.

    Confusing or what!

I rented this movie because Christian Bale is a fine actor. However, even his talents couldn't make this film watchable. It is a very confusing movie to say the least - it jumps from one thing to another and even at the end I wasn't sure what had or had not happened. The sex and nudity is gratuitous rather than necessary to the plot and becomes pretty boring after a while. The characters in the story are unpleasant and quite frankly I couldn't have cared less if they were murdered or not! I wouldn't watch it again.

    Stunning in every way

Christian Bale delivers a performace of a lifetime in this totally compelling film. Based on a famous novel, this is the story of a wealthy and eccentric young man, who suffers (gets enjoyment?) from his dark and gruesome second personality. This is one of those rare films, where every line is specific, meaningful and essential to the story. Superbly shot and lit, with excellent performances from a perfectly chosen cast. This is a must-see film, nadwill leave you wanting more. Enjoy.

    Armani and Coke, anyone?

Great film, watch it for the review of eighties pop music by the lead character. Watch it for Willem Dafoe's performance as the smart private investigator. Watch it for the interior design triumphs of homes and eating places.

Most of all watch it and be stunned by Christian Bale's portrayal of the troubled (!) Patric Bateman. Bring back the eighties and moneyed New York. Armani and Coke anyone? Pass me the Bollinger, Rupert.

Bret Easton-Ellis' book was an absolute classic and this film fulfils that potential. This is one of the best movies ever made and lifts parts directly from the book, I have never seen a book made into a movie with more skill and obvious love. An indictment of the lack of morality in the 1980's and a truly funny movie - try getting a reservation at Dorsia's now. A highly misunderstood film that most people interpret wrongly. Hint, it wasn't all a dream.

    Gutless

I was really excited about seeing this film when it came out after reading the book.

I went straight out and hired it the very second it was released.

Major dissapointment,Christian Bale just does not come across right and the film misses out so much of the really good stuff from the book.

Its not a bad film its just that it could and should have been so so much better,i cant help but feel gutted at the missed oppertunity to make a modern classic.
