An Affair To Remember

In this legendary tearjerker, the world's most eligible bachelor (Cary Grant) is set to marry an heiress. But unfortunately for his bride-to-be, while he's traveling alone on a luxury liner he meets Terry McKay (Deborah Kerr) and realizes he's engaged to the wrong woman--and she's engaged to the wrong man. They finally agree to spend six months apart; if they still love each other at the end of that time, they will reunite at the top of the Empire State Building. But the path of true love does not always run smooth, and tragedy threatens to tear the couple apart. Leo McCarey directed both the original (LOVE AFFAIR) and this remake, and viewers often amiably battle over which film is the more touching. This much-loved film features the Academy Award-nominated title song and a splendid supporting cast.

This wonderfully frothy 1950s confection has inspired many a comic moment, as well as the climax on top of the Empire State Building in the much-loved Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan film Sleepless in Seattle. The incomparable Cary Grant is at his slickly arch and urbane best as a wealthy, idle womaniser who meets his match in self-contained, sassy Deborah Kerr aboard a luxury liner. Director Leo McCarey dresses his sophisticated comedy of sexual manners in an atmosphere of rhinestone-encrusted dresses, impeccably pressed dinner suits and raised champagne glasses. The second half slips off the boil somewhat, but, thanks to Grant and Kerr, this remains a cinematic object lesson in the perfect rapier delivery of cut-and-thrust dialogue.

Remake of Love Affair, a surprisingly successful mixture of smart lines, sentiment and tears, all applied with style and assurance.

    This movie is perfect!

The ultra weepie, the chick flick of them all - everything is gorgeous in this movie. I defy you not to be bawling your eyes out at the end! Magic.

    Frustrating...but good...

The last third of this film is so frustrating, but is that because it was intended to be like that? Or is it just because that’s how people were at the time this film was made? Without wanting to give away too much of the plot, all I can say is that I was sat there fit to burst, screaming… “Just tell him!!!”

Apart from that this is a thoroughly enjoyable film and one that I would definitely recommend.
