This archetypal glamorous MGM musical was the deserved winner of six Oscars, including best picture, collected by genius producer Arthur Freed, with a special Oscar presented to star Gene Kelly for advancing the art of choreography on screen. It still looks pretty good today, with marvellous Technicolored design, athletic dancing from Kelly and a superb Gershwin score, but some sequences have dated. The climactic 17-minute ballet on the theme of the French Impressionists is a little precious and over-staged by today's standards. But much of the movie remains delightful: Kelly and the children performing I Got Rhythm; a wonderful debut from Leslie Caron; and Georges Guetary's I'll Build a Stairway to Paradise. If you've never seen it, don't miss, but better was to come with Singin' in the Rain and The Band Wagon.
Altogether delightful musical holiday, one of the highspots of the Hollywood genre, with infectious enthusiasm and an unexpected sense of the Paris that was.
Though set years ago, An American in Paris, gives a great insight to Paris and its landmarks with stunning shots, great if you have never been or love the city.
Gene Kelly as ever is a great lead and the songs and dance numbers remind you of a better age. You can lose yourself to the romance and the other worldly atmosphere. A must see for Musical lovers
Amazing to see the effort, sets and choreography. But I wouldn't watch it again for quite a few years.
