Although originally a 3-part TV documentary, this film is accomplished and engrossing. Its nice to see a film that focuses on a character who is profoundly shy - rather than the usual show-offs you get in most main-stream movies. I have to admit that I hadn't heard of Janet Frame (the subject of the film) before I saw it, but if it?s an accurate portrayal of her life then she really is an extraordinary person. This is one of the most naturalistic and "real" films I have seen. There's no flashy direction, ridiculous plot twists or special effects - they aren't needed because the central performances (by Kerry Fox as the adult Janet in particular) are superb. Kerry Frame?s performance is incredibly subtle - her character has a huge orange afro, is incredibly shy, and can't really communicate with people except via writing - and yet Janet's amazing character, determination, humour & intelligence shine through so strongly. Overall, watching this film is a life affirming experience, and I highly recommend it.

I can't say this was a bad film, but I didn't really get into it and didn't watch it all. It is just not what I would normally watch and now wonder why I wanted to rent it.

Solid, unsentimental, moving tribute to a woman whose life story is a great tribute to her powers of survival, tenacity, honesty & wholeheartedness. Not the horror story I was expecting but an uplifting heart warming tale of the triumph of the human spirit.

oh dear. I love carefully crafted, slow meaning, character-driven films so have trouble finding sufficient to watch within EasyCinema. I was delighted to find this, directed by Jane Campion. But my frame of mind over the following 150 odd minutes dimished to eventual lethargy & despair.

This truly is dreadful. It so needs a decent editor to get a look at it, withdraw the film, and release it when watchable. OK, so it was stretched out to fill (pad?) three TV episodes, but this finished product is dire.

How many times can the cameras linger on bland, expressionless children's faces; how many times does the same point need to be made. This film plods through heavy mud, or treacle. Every point is laboured over numerous times. there's no demand or presumption whatever that the film's audience may possibly have some degree of intelligence.

Frightful. Avoid. Unless you have a great deal of time to fill, and want to bring down your happy mood, and learn a great deal about the necessity of a good editing room.

  • Obviously edited by a butcher.

It's pretty clear that this was once a miniseries, it's split into three chapters that look like they overlapped at one point. The lazy editing only makes you pray for some respite in the form of an engaging plot, which unfortunately does not materialise. I've read about Janet Frame, but never read any of her books, and I definitely do not want to after wasting two and a half hours of my life on this worthy, depressing biopic. Frame is an entirely unsympathetic character, as are all the people in this film. Every person she encounters is devoid of a third dimension, and she has one expression; pained.

Watching this 'film' is agony. It's not even conclusive agony.
