  • Surprisingly excellent! Shame about the title of the movie!

If you're craving to watch a movie of substances with a superb storyline and excellent actors, then you need to watch this movie. While the movie title is unimaginative, the movie is so much better. It's the coming of age movie of a young pretty, promising girl in the 60's.Caught between her demanding father's plans for her to go to Oxford and the exciting grown up world of classical music concerts and supper clubs that her older boyfriend introduces her to, she is faced with some hard decisions on which road she needs to follow. What I really liked about this movie is how perceptive and intelligent Jenny is (Carey Mulligan), more so than her insecure, over demanding parents. Clearly times have changed (and thank goodness) because these days a 30 something man pursuing a 16 year old would be looked at as a paedophile stalking a young woman, but in the movie, her father didn't seem to mind at all,in actual fact he seemed to have been only too eager that his child be courted by this older man, for the simple fact that this bloke claimed to know CS Lewis!!!.No questions asked. Being young, bright and pretty, Jenny wanted to know that her life wasn't going to be a continuous sameness that she sees in her parents life. But when temptation comes her way, and what seems like gold, is not all that, Jenny comes to the realisation that in life you cannot take shortcuts and cram everything you think is exciting before you are ready. Brilliant!Cannot recommend it enough, it is a must see!

This film is an eye opener to what we percieve of life and if planning our future worth it or living to the second. I am going to recommed this film to most people I know, maybe young adults would enjoy this film most as it about the journey many take but maybe not in the same way as the story buts a fun an intersented film. i enjoyed it so much

I loved this. How come some films are really famous and some aren't? All the performances are excellent, and you really care what happens. Should be part of the 6th form curriculum! A film about growing up, and truth, and accepting responsability, I guess, but not limited to teenagers- I think we've all been there more than once, and we'll keep going back there too, and it's nice to have such an intelligent protagonist to tell our story. And some good female roles- it's kind of like a british french film, but better- does that make sense? Don't know where the other reviewers are coming from with the whole 'grooming/child abuse' angle- I didn't get that at all. Yeah, cool film.

  • A challenging subject handled well. Really worth a watch.

This film tackles a really difficult subject with a great deal of subtlety and in a way that allows you to feel for the characters on all sides of the story. Carey Mulligan plays her role brilliantly and I can see why she won an award for her role as a young, bright but naive girl swept up in the seemingly exciting world of the rich, upper class part of society, which is so far from the world she has been brought up in. I thought the ending was a little abrupt and unsatisfying but don't let that put you off watching this otherwise great piece of film making.

Such a powerful story showing the dynamics of not only first love, but the love between father and daughter which is very moving at times. This is touch the soul of anyone who has been let down or deceived by a loved one or nearly lost sight of their dreams
