Fantastic!
By a customer from Buckinghamshire, England , 15 Feb 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
I absolutely loved this film! With a strong cast and the very lovely Rupert Everett, it was everything a film should be - a great screen adaptation that was both witty and entertaining - I would recommend it to anyone!- Was this review helpful to you?

(42)Not my ideal
By Bobsview (549 reviews) from Gloucestershire , 13 Mar 2013Oscar Wilde Victorian political and romantic drama / comedy/ farce. Feels like a play migrated to screen (which it is). Some people would love it but not really my taste.- Was this review helpful to you?

Slow but mainly good acting
By a customer , 05 Jan 2012Clever plot; lots of twists and turns right to the last minute. Good period detail. Actors were all, bar one, brilliant, especially Minnie Driver as Mabel who uses her face wonderfully to express so many nuances of feeling. Julianne Moore gave me the worst experience in that I was aware of her 'acting' all the time; it fair set my teeth on edge. I do not know her but guess she is American doing her best with an English accent. It's not bad but her presence was excruciating to me; everything forced. She was probably just miscast; I am sure others could have managed the menace that she failed to adequately deliver. Other critics have mentioned the slowness; I agree. I contemplated turning it off more than once but the quality of the acting meant I carried on with it regardless. Rainy afternoon with a box of chox type film- Was this review helpful to you?

Good modern version
By Jackx (7 reviews) , 07 Oct 2011A sleek and well done version. Well acted and true to the book. Good casting and scenery etc
However, a bit strange to see it done as if it was a modern film. Fast moving, modern type of emotions displayed but still the old fashioned writing/language.
All good once I got my head around it and 'tuned in'.- Was this review helpful to you?

Very enjoyable
By Razumovskaya (1 review) , 15 Jun 2011Wilde is not fashionable at the moment and this is one of his lesser-known plays, but don't let that put you off. Its story of blackmail and dubious goings-on in high places is just as relevant today as it was at the end of the 1800s. The styling is excellent, the costumes gorgeous and Rupert Everett puts in a bravura performance as Lord Goring: insincere, witty, cynical but ultimately a good egg. The film misses out on 5 stars as I found the ending just a little corny, and for whatever reasons, the sound on the DVD was so poor and faint that much of Oscar's brilliant wordsmanship was all but inaudible. Worth watching.- Was this review helpful to you?
