Brilliant but insecure medical student Paula (played by Franka Potente from Run Lola Run) goes to study an anatomy course at the prestigious Heidelberg University and uncovers a sinister secret society infamous for its ruthless research on live bodies. The dissected victims pile up along with the suspenseful shrieks in Austrian director Stefan Ruzowitzky's hugely enjoyable Hammer-style horror that is given a stark hi-tech and contemporary makeover with congealed helpings of pharmaceutical fear and surgical shock on the side. One of the biggest box-office hits in Germany horror film history, this creepy continental chiller even adds Third Reich fright to its unusual scream-laden formula.

    Intelligent "horror"

I really enjoyed this well made, intelligent film. Not sure it is really a horror film though, more of a thriller really.

It is no where near as gory as you expect and I am surprised it got an 18 certificate. No nudity, very tasteful sex scene that you can see on TV, and minimal gore. Where on earth do the censors get an 18 from?!

Lots of extras on the DVD, and unless you hate subtitles, I would go for the German language with English sub titles option. It seems easier to follow the story and the dubbing is bad (not the voices but the matching with the lips).Well worth seeing ( I watched it twice!).
