Although we all know that the ancient Romans weren't always nice people, this BBC series is over the top with its shock factor. Instead of trying to concentrate on the history of the period, BBC chose to emphasize the nastiest, most perverted, sickening bits they could come up with. We, as a familiy, have an interest in the history of Ancient Rome and counted on the BBC to help fill in some gaps. That they did, with a film that made me feel physically sick. We didn't finish the first disc and certainly didn't watch the second. I would expect better from the BBC.
I saw some of these recently shown on BBC, and was very impressed. The documentary / film style works very well, and easily draws you in. The series as the title suggests shows Ancient Rome, with its various well and lesser known emperors. The budget for this must have been quite impressive, I found the films very informative and interesting - and thats from someone who knows nothing about history. Well worth a watch.
