    Roddenberry's masterpiece?

The only problems I ever had with Trek is that it assumed that Earth would be the centre of any galactic collective and that the future would be perfect. Also the aliens introduced were always invincible in the beginning ( The Borg, The Jem'Hadar etc) but ended up as whipping boys. With Andromeda Roddenberry has revealed his darker vision of the future. Earth is not the cente of the universe and the good guys lose as many as they win. What raises Andromeda above the general standard is the script and the acting.

Kevin Sorbo is that most endearing of characters, a flawed hero. His performance lays the ghost of hercules to rest permanently. All the main characters interact flawlessly with each other but there is always that air of mistrust that prevents the series from becoming too cosy and insular.

The pilot episodes are possibly the best pilot shows I've ever seen and, unusually for any show, rate among the best episodes of the series as a whole.

The only gripe I have is that the extras are only average. There are some decent commentaries from Sorbo but nothing from the other cast members. Still, this is a minor thing and will not detract from an excellent sci-fi show

    The starting point

The best of Andromeda starts on the 2nd season, but season 1 is a necessary viewing to understand the plot and the Andromeda crew.

Although season 1 is not the best display of sci-fi TV is good entertainment all the same. Start your journey here, and by the time you get to season 2 and 3 you won't want to leave!!!

An attempt by Majel Barrett (or as she now preferrs to be called Rodenberry) to leverage her late husband's name. Still, even without the baggage of being "Gene Roddenberry's Andromida" it is fair enough standard issue US sci-fi; mismatched crew with mysterious aliens on an open ended mission.

No fan of Dr Spock but give me Star Trek anyday

Not being a fan of all things Trekkie I thought I'd give this a go as it wasn't connected. Wish I'd put Star Trek on my list...The first episode brought on a heavy bout of snoring (apparently) and although the following episodes were marginally more interesting, ie I looked up from my book a few times, I'm not too keen on adding the next disc to my list. However, I feel I should give it a chance, it has to get better surely...

    Great idea, poor execution

This is a wonderfully imaginative story idea spoiled by some very poor casting and writing. There is not a single attractive character, apart from the captain, and the lead female character in particular gets on your nerves very quickly.

It also feels very derivative. There are echoes of Lexx, Star Trek Voyager and Blake's Seven. None of that would matter, though if the characterisation had been better thought through. At the end of the day, these series stand or fall on your ability to empathise with at least some of the cast, and I was left longing for some good old-fashioned Star Trek charisma.

Gene Roddenbury spent most of his life trying to recreate his inspirational success with Star Trek - this is another failed attempt despite closer similarities to ST than some of his other efforts. This is far more "Waggon Train to the Stars" but falls into too many sterotypical pit trips. Having said that, you do wonder how much input he had and how much was written after his death by Nurse Chappel! <br> It's still a very attractive show with Kevin Sorbo recreating his role in Herclues (!) and some good sets. Watchable but not challenging.

    SCIFI crazy

The original Star Trek will always take a lot of beating, but I beleive that Andromeda comes pretty close, although Different aspects drive the series, the Story lines & characters make for a great series

Got into this series quite late!

I have to admit I thought the first few episodes of this series were rubbish the first time I saw them. But later on it kind of grew on me. Have rented the series from the beginning now and I'm loving it. The effects aren't brilliant, but then it's not meant to win awards and anyway, I like my Sci-Fi a bit tacky anyway!

Okay but the best bit is when......

The first officer (dodgey Neitzchien) escapes from the guards in the corridor, stands up and he's got the majority of his trousers up his crack. Nice to see wedgies are still popular in the future! I nearly wet myself and it kind of spoiled the first disc for me, but still gets 5 stars coz it made me laugh....
