Jennifer Lopez stars as tough Chicago cop Sharon Pogue in Luis Mandoki's ANGEL EYES. Sharon gives no quarter to the criminals on her beat. She's all too ready to beat up any lowlife who treats her disrespectfully. Sharon grew up in an abusive household, and this is the root of her anger. Catch (Jim Caviezel) has his own trauma to deal with. He's a drifter, seemingly connected to nothing and no one. But he suddenly becomes focused one day when he spots Sharon at a coffee shop. When she rushes headlong into a potentially fatal situation, he's there to save her. This odd, quiet, mysterious man intrigues her, and they begin to take tentative steps toward a relationship. Sharon discovers that Catch is dealing with a tragic past, and in his efforts to escape his pain, he's lost everything--even his identity. ANGEL EYES is a sensitive, intelligent, and touching romantic drama about two people struggling to connect despite tremendous odds. The film is surprising in small ways, in its telling details, its gentle humor, and in the subtly effective performances of its stars--Lopez, Caviezel, and especially Sonia Braga, in an uncharacteristically fragile performance as Sharon's abused mother.

Whimsy is not usually director Luis Mandoki's cup of tea. He specialises in bringing us realistic love stories such as When a Man Loves a Woman and here again he delivers an unconventional romance. Jennifer Lopez is excellent as embittered Chicago cop Sharon Pogue who's hopelessly at odds with her father and brother's brutality towards their wives. On the streets, however, she is as aggressive as they are until rescued one day by enigmatic drifter Catch (Jim Caviezel). The two begin a tentative relationship but Lopez soon realises that Caviezel's ethereal manner has its roots in a tragic accident. Here Mandoki examines whether damaged personalities can come together in spite of their emotional baggage and it's this darker slant that makes Angel Eyes intriguing. What lets the entire experience down is an appalling finale, which reeks of schmaltz and studio pressure for a conventional ending. The director should never have compromised.

Jim Caviezel, star of Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ", reportedly told Jennifer Lopez to put some clothes back on in a sex scene. The pair were filming "Angel Eyes", but Caviezel didn't want to see the stunner nude. He told the Daily Mirror that he wanted J-Lo to cover up so she didn't offend his wife, Kerri. "I want to respect her," he said. "The only bare breasts I want next to me in my life belong to my wife." J-Lo, twice voted "World's... Read more
