    [Highly rated reviewer]

This the only film directed by Alan Parker that I rate at all, which is funny cos in a recent documentary of his work they missed this one completely.

Its dark, post-war New Orleans setting is a wonderful backdrop for an American Gothic tale. Add to that sleazy old Mickey Rourke (remember him?) in his best role, Robert De Niro being all self-restrained menace and a plot which slowly works towards an ending which is as chilling as it is inevitable - a recipe for a classic. Not to forget Charlotte Rampling and Lisa Bonet ;-) How could I?

An engaging thriller. I always like movies which allow proper time for the investigation to develop, the clues gradually unfolding. Some nice camera work and evocative locations in New York and Louisiana, giving a good contrast of settings, keeping up the interest. Excellent performances. First rate.

  • Mickey Rourke at the top of his game

1955, Private Detective gets job from strange client, has to track down singer, ends up in Louisiana, more strange goings on. Dark thriller from Alan Parker when Mickey Rourke still looked human and really is at the top of his game here playing the lead superbly. Great support from Robert De Niro and Lisa Bonet who shrugged of her Cosby Show tag with this film and her chemistry with Rourke is excellent. The film has a hot and steamy feel about it that you expect it to be an erotic thriller at times but is also quite creepy and is only really spoiled by the hammy scenes near the end.

Thankfully the promised sub-titles were absent, the sound track was abysmal, making it a complete waste of time to watch.

Interesting story line when you get your head around it but it really was hard to follow, defo a film to concentrate on or you'll not have a clue whats happening.

Worth watching but not really one for the collection.

I'd seen this before. It starts out fine but gets a bit lost in those Lousiana backwoods. Saved by excellent performances from Mickey and Robert.
