People moan about our ...
By a customer from ROTHERHAM , 27 Aug 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
People moan about our welfare state (or percieved lack of!) This film is a timely reminder of what life could be like if we didn't have it at all. This is a film that richly deserves the praise that it has had. The true story of Frank McCourts early life in 30's Limerick is not pretty but makes compelling viewing. It has its funny moments and also moments of pathos. The cast are brilliant in their understated acting, making all characters "real" and 3 dimentional. I wish I'd watched this sooner.- Was this review helpful to you?

(46)Nice imagery
By MsJonesy (1 review) , 13 Aug 2011It was ok. To be fair its a difficult book to dramatise but worth watching if you've read it. It is at least good to look at and brings the era to life. I love Robert Carlyle and he doesn't disappoint with his performance.- Was this review helpful to you?

Great performance
By midgelet (8 reviews) from Amersham , 02 May 2011Thought this was very well done. Great acting, difficult subject and finely observed. I read the book but thought this was more potent. The acting was excellent.- Was this review helpful to you?

A little disappointed
By a customer from Belfast , 07 Jun 2010Absolutely loved Frank McCourt's books and the telling of his stories, I was a bit disappointed the film didn't manage to reflect a lot of the emotions going on. It was funny and sad at the right parts in the film but a lot of comedy effect that was in the book was missing on screen. I was laughing out loud when I read the book, I felt like something was missing in the film but I suppose the bar was set high with this one.- Was this review helpful to you?
