A refreshingly un-Holywood movie. Raw, rough, tough and very realistic. Great performances, especially from the young lead and the Ma Grishom-type mother/grandmother. Really surprising sudden despatches of key characters. Recommended, although not for a cosy night in.

I can watch most things but not this one, it must be my age I like to have a bit of a story line in a movie, perhaps there was one in here but I couldn't see it. It's a no go from me.

When his mother dies of an overdose, a Melbourne teenager is sucked into the dangerous world of his criminal family, who are at war with the local police. Slow burning drama takes time to aclimatise to, but becomes ever more riveting and intense as the heat closes in on his violent clan. What emerges is a fight for the boy's soul between Detective Guy Pearce and demonic Grandmother Jacki Weaver and the Director does well to keep us guessing right to the end.

Well worth watching. Rough and realistic. Most films romanticise gangsters and crime families, this is raw truth. So hard to say refreshing when you watch a film like this, but it is. A must see.

This is the second time I have watched this movie and still found it enthralling although not an easy movie to watch. This is filmed more in the vein of British movies that shy from the glitz and the glamour and deal with the grittiness of the underworld. Top class acting and hard hitting story line makes this movie great viewing however it will not be for everyone.
