ANITA & ME is a charming, comic look back at the 1970s based on the autobiographical novel by Meera Syal, who also stars in the film as her own aunt. Set in 1972, Meena is a twelve year old girl born to Indian parents whose life is turned upside down when she befriends an outrageous fourteen year old, Anita. Soon the bookish Meena is introduced to a world of fun and music whilst struggling with the problems of adolescence, racism and the culture clash she encounters with members of her own family. As with EAST IS EAST and Zadie Smith's WHITE TEETH, ANITA & ME avoids an earnest approach in favour of presenting a personal dimension to the development of a multicultural society in post-War Britain.

As a light-hearted depiction of a Punjabi family settling in a small Midlands village in the early 1970s, this comedy drama is rarely more than one-dimensional, but Meera Syal's adaptation of her own novel is still consistently amusing. At the heart of the story is Asian teenager Meena (Chandeep Uppal), and her relationship with her white neighbour Anita (Anna Brewster), whose sexual maturity and rebellious behaviour alarm Meena's traditionalist family. Its cultural themes invite comparison with East Is East or Bend It like Beckham, but the story lacks the emotional core of either, while the laughs of recognition that the fads, fashions and attitudes of the era are supposed to invoke may not be forthcoming from audiences of Anita's age group. However, the above-average supporting cast, including Sanjeev Bhaskar, Lynn Redgrave, Mark Williams, Kathy Burke and Syal herself, adds comedic lustre to this enjoyable, if inconsequential, movie.
Haphazardly plotted movie that tries to take in a great deal of good and bad cross-cultural experience, but somehow loses its way.
After the likes of 'East Is East' and 'Bend It Like Beckham', I've grown quite a fan of British movies starring Asian actors! 'Anita And Me' managed to sustain the quality but left me wondering whether or not the formula has been exhausted.
Like its counterparts, the movie managed to deliver some great comedy moments, but I found myself wondering if I'd heard all this before. The story itself is a simple tale of a 12 year old girl (Meena) who's struggling to grow up, please her family and be more like her new best friend Anita.
Although we're given a detailed insight into Meena's life and thoughts, and feel as if we can relate to her situations, it's almost like you're left wondering where the story is leading. The ending is somewhat predictable and unexciting, and left me waiting for some sort of twist in the tale, but not entirely disappointing. I think the reason for this is that because you feel close to Meena as a character, you feel satisfied with the conclusion of the movie.
Overall, I wouldn't make an effort to watch it, but definately not a waste of time for those quiet nights in!
Superb film, well filmed, well acted, extremely funny, but really sad too!!!
