When this, intended as a companion piece to Jules et Jim, was released in 1971, it flopped. Shocked and disappointed, Truffaut re-cut and re-distributed it, but still without success. In 1985, shortly before his death, he worked on it again and released a definitive restored version. This is it, although you wouldn't know it from the blurb, and it's great. Running just over two hours, it gives you time to get absorbed in the characters and their relationship over the ten year period during which the film is set. The societies in which they lived at the turn of the century are lovingly reproduced, both by beautiful cinematography and in an intelligent script which recognises that the moral dilemmas faced by the characters are produced as much by the attitudes of the time in which they lived as by their personalities and the dynamics of their relationships. It's a long film, elegant and elegiac, and I was engrossed from the start. Highly recommended.
Nice film. Not exactly my cup of tea but enjoyable enough.
