Cool history movie
By Tio from West Yorkshire , 15 Mar 2006[Highly rated reviewer]
I remember seeing this movie when i was a kid and it helped fire my love of history. Now renting it again to watch with my family was very satisfying dispite being made in 1969. My kids aged 11 and 9 were equally enthralled. Its great acting and a great story, rent and enjoy.- Was this review helpful to you?

(13)One of the Best Historical Classics
By Chrisaljack (302 reviews) from Hellingly , 26 Jul 2012This is an absolute classic: first class script (a really good starting point!), brilliant performances all round (with Richard Burton at his best), superb photography - what more can you ask for? The simple fact that this film is over forty years old and still available is testament to its quality and desirability.- Was this review helpful to you?

First is best
By a customer from Bridge of Allan , 28 Oct 2008For all of you who watched The Other Boleyn Girl and were disappointed, give this a go! OK so it's old - '69 - but it's remarkably good. You cannot fault the acting, the costumes, the settings, or the history. Being somewhat old myself, I had a vague memory of this film after seeing The Other Boleyn Girl, and was so glad I watched it again.
Trust me! Give it a go!- Was this review helpful to you?

Text book stuff
By InspectorSands (209 reviews) from London , 14 Oct 2008Richard Burton plays Henry VIII in this pretty routine account of his marriage to the ill-fated Anne Boleyn, played by Geneviève Bujold (no, me neither). It's not bad, just no surprises really. Burton's stacatto, barked delivery seems very mannered here perhaps because he has so much dialogue and he's not offset by anyone much - being King, he has it all his own way, unlike his fights with Martha in Virginia Woolf.
Part of the problem is that none of the characters are exactly sympathetic and you don't care much; plus you know how it turns out. Anthony Quinn is good as the slimy Cardinal Woolsey who meets his match in Boleyn, realising it only too late. But you can't see why Boleyn would captivate Henry. She seems a bit Gemma Craven-ish.
Very much a poor man's A Man For All Seasons and less exciting than a text book.- Was this review helpful to you?
