MGM's wonderfully zesty film of Irving Berlin's Broadway smash stars a perfectly cast Betty Hutton as Annie Oakley, borrowed from Paramount to replace an ailing (and, to tell the truth, unsuitable) Judy Garland. George Sidney's bravura direction gets the most out of a marvellous score, which includes such classics as Anything You Can Do (I Can Do Better) and, of course, There's No Business Like Show Business. Handsome newcomer Howard Keel makes an impressive movie musical debut as sharp-shooting Frank Butler, and the Technicolor and costume design are particularly ravishing. It's hard to see how this could have been any better.

    Sheer entertainment.

This film takes me back to the good old days of proper entertainment when you could sit down at the cinema with your children and enjoy a good story, with songs that you'd sing together on the way home. Of course there were films which were unfit for children below a certain age, now most of the films wanted and watched by the youngsters, are unfit for watching by adults. For sheer entertainment watch this wonderful musical and revel in the memory of the songs which you will have heard before whatever your age.

There's No Business Quite Like Showbusiness

This is quite simply, the most fantastic work of art!

The music is wonderful, the story joyously (loosely) based on legend, the cast fantastic (Keel and Hutton make nearly as good a coupling as Keel & Day in Calamity Jane!), the scenery and costumes colourful and lively.

From the sumptuous melodies of "The Girl That I Marry" and "They Say That Falling In Love Is Wonderful", to the fun "I'm An Indian Too", "Anything You Can Do" and of course "There's No Business Like Showbusiness", how can you not feel wonderful by the time the final scenes come around.

I've known this musical for years, but waited nearly as many years to see it on the silver screen.

I defy you not to come away singing for all your life is worth, everything about it is appealing!

    one of the classic musicals

I had forgotten how many unforgettable songs there are in this musical, performed brilliantly by Howard Keel, Betty Hutton and other members of the cast. So sad that Betty Hutton died in penury

    What is there to say?

This is a good Hollywood Musical. If you like musicals and haven't seen this one then you should rent it. If you are already familiar with it then it will help to pass a rainy day. It's not fantastic but it is good.

    Quick on the draw

A below par MGM musical based loosely on the life of fairground sharpshooter Annie Oakley. Plenty of good tunes but lack of dance routines lets the musical down as a spectacle. Betty Hutton became a big star when she replaced Judy Garland who was fired after one outburst of temper too many! Howard Keel gives good support as Buffalo Bill. Worth a look, if only for the songs.

There's no business like show business

Full of fantastic songs, and the great white all-dancing teeth of Howard Keel... a fun family musical, plus fascinating footage of Judy Garland in the title role...not quite right for it either!

the extras make the dvd worthwhile

this is perfectly entertaining fare for those who like their movie musicals. it is transferred rather woodenly to the big screen however by george sidney. anyone who has seen 'the harvey girls' will know what to expect; colourful but static direction. the performances too are less than satisfactory and remain as cardboard as much of the scenery. what remains however are the breezy, tuneful berlin songs and the extras on this dvd.

these out-takes are fascinating. judy garland was on the verge of one of her many breakdowns, but managed to perform two numbers preserved here. contrasting these with betty hutton's versions is a fascinating experience and it is just a shame, as far as i am concerned, that judy didn't finish the movie. she would have provided the vulnerability and subtlety of mood the central character requires. this was something doris day also possessed and if you haven't seen the superior western musical 'calamity jane' then do so - it's a real treat!
