Woody Allens finest hour (and a half)
By Noel Clay from Colchester, England , 08 Dec 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
For anyone who's ever hated himself, and wondered why ... watch Annie Hall.
Let's face it, regardless of flaws and inconsistencies, it's worth watching pretty much any Woody Allen movie just for the few classic one-liners that are bound to be in there. With Woody playing basically himself here, he delves into past loves, metaphysics and lobsters with more of those classic lines than you can shake a stick at.
Although I think generally Woody is infinitely more talented as a stand-up comedian than as a filmmaker, I admit that I do have something of a soft spot for 'Annie Hall'. Mostly it's just the sheer simplicity of the storyline that just allows Woody to go ahead and revel in his trademark self-deprecative, depressive humour -- constantly self-referencing, coming out with witty remarks and amusing sketches as only he can. Also, it's just so INVENTIVE. You get a real sense of a director who is simply improvising, almost like watching Woody himself on stage in front of a live audience. It's a quality that very few of his movies I've seen have possessed, and that's why I think this is easily his best work.- Was this review helpful to you?

(116)Hideous characters, dull film.
By Rach18 (3 reviews) , 07 May 2013This film had been highly recommended to me, and I have to say, I was thoroughly disappointed. What a load of self indulgent, dull claptrap. The characters are unpleasant and irritating and I found it a real challenge to watch the whole film. Over-rated to say the least.- Was this review helpful to you?

Classic Allen comedy

A classic Woody Allen comedy and possibly one of his best. Very funny throughout with great performances from Allen and Keaton.- Was this review helpful to you?

Woody Allen is not a sex symbol!
By a customer , 20 Jan 2013I had to turn this film off. It was self indulgent rubbish. I could not be convinced at all that beautiful women would want to sleep with Woody Allen. Maybe I missed the point?- Was this review helpful to you?

Interesting film but a bit dated and overrated
By Abby88 (167 reviews) from Bognor Regis , 09 Sep 2012This film was alright. There were some great unusual comedy moments and interesting perspectives but some parts felt frustrating and silly.- Was this review helpful to you?

Great for grown ups..not so much for teenagers
By a customer , 22 Aug 2012I thought it was great, if slow to get going. Woody Allen is a master of the one liner, and the slapstick was masterful. My 14 year son waas bored and wandered off after 10 minutes.- Was this review helpful to you?
