Counterfactual history
By RayL (12 reviews) from Frodsham , 05 Apr 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
It doesn't matter whether it is true or not, counterfactual histories are a genre in their own right and this is a rather good one with an intelligent script and excellent visuals.- Was this review helpful to you?

(66)I really enjoyed.
By eurocash (2 reviews) , 13 Sep 2012I really enjoyed this film, at first it was a bit confusing to know who was who and what was going on but after a small while i really got into the tale and to be honest i think this is a true account for shakespeare.- Was this review helpful to you?

Anonymous - the director should have remained so
By Odinsbeard (3 reviews) , 10 Sep 2012Dull as dishwater. And played like a pantomime.
I am intrigued by the plot basis. But the execution is diabolical.- Was this review helpful to you?

There's a good story hidden in there somewhere...
By a customer , 05 Sep 2012There is a great film and story hidden in this movie but it jumps around so much that it is difficult to follow.
I love how it begins but after then, time will change and move around so much it'll take concentration to keep up! (example scene1 10 years ago, scene2 5 years previous - but to scene 1 or present story day?)
Great performance from Rhys Ifans.- Was this review helpful to you?

a Shakespearian whodunnit
By RSJ (25 reviews) from Dagenham , 13 Aug 2012Anonymous, a story which tries to tie shakespear, Elizabeth 1st love life and Tudor politics all into one thriller. well played by rhys ifans who carries a far fetched story but still it is enjoyable if your willing to ignore history.- Was this review helpful to you?

Boring tale with wasted potential
By pyromantis (99 reviews) from Nottingham , 06 Aug 2012The idea that Shakespere didn't write any of his plays has been a conspiracy theory for a while now and this movie attempts to play out that theory in cinematic form.
Attempts being the key word there. What could have been an exciting tale of deception and falsehood is instead a boorish slog through a bunch of confusing and unlikable characters. The script is decent enough but fails to shine and equally fails to give the great cast much room to manoeuvre. I found myself dropping to sleep as the snail-pace tale wound into it's second hour and couldn't even bring myself to see it to the end. Maybe the last half hour makes it all worthwhile but that's no excuse for the tedium. Calling it a 'thriller' is a but generous as it's about as thrilling as watching paint dry for the most part.
If you adore Shakespere and slow, talky, period waffle then you may enjoy this, otherwise don't waste your time.- Was this review helpful to you?
