Antichrist

Only two actors, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Willem Defoe, inhabit the space of this supernatural thriller directed by Lars Von Trier. The stars play a couple who attempt to grieve for their dead child by living in seclusion in the middle of a forest. But their story does not end there: in the forest, they encounter pure evil in Satan. With Von Trier at the helm, ANTICHRIST promises to be a challenging, intelligent film that doesn't adhere to the conventions of cinema or religion.

    A surreal experience

A beautifully constructed film, which at times becomes slightly self indulgent and you either love it or hate it. Gone is the Dogme '95 look which was applied in The Idiots or even in Dogville, instead we are presented with glossy HD imagery equalling thousands of beautiful stills. This film is the combination of beautiful visuals with one morbid storyline behind it. The performances are superb by both Dafoe and Gainsbourg.

Very explicit, definitely not for the squeemish.

    A patchwork film..

First of all I should say I love Lars Von Trier's work and was really looking forward to this. Somehow it failed to deliver and I really wanted it to. I can see what he was trying to achieve and it certainly left a mark on the brain. I'm finding myself thinking about it long after seeing the film but this is purely from its powerful visual imagery and I'm not sure if this is purely a long piece of fine art rather than a film. Sometimes these things can be too pretentious for their own good! There is no doubt that some of the beautiful shots in this film are groundbreaking. If you make film, art or just appreciate beauty then you should watch it just for these HD moments! However, the rest of the film is almost the opposite. Bad edits, poor focus and shaky camera work easily visible to my untrained eye. If this was done on purpose then it didn't work because it made the film patchy and inaccessible when juxtaposed with the 'money shots' (pardon the pun). This was made worse by the long winded story line with a very confused message behind it as well as characters it was difficult to empathise with. Von Trier was depressed when he started writing this film and it shows. The psycho sexual aspect is disturbing and my boundaries were challenged a couple of times which is very unusual. I won't give the game away but if this is a journey into his mind then it is DARK. One wonders again if this was done merely to court the inevitable controversy it created and if it ultimately backfired. I would definitely suggest to give this film a try. Go in with an open mind but be aware you may not like it AT ALL. You may LOVE it and it will change your film going life. I, however, cannot decide. It has left its images emblazoned in my mind but I'm not sure it's for the right reasons...2.5 stars.

    Lars von Trier: Antichrist

    • 21 Jul 2009

Not one to shy away from controversy, Lars von Trier is a director who likes to cause trouble. His latest film, starring Charlotte Gainsbourg and Willem Dafoe, has already been censored in several countries due its strong sexual and violent content, but has been passed uncut in the UK. We sat down with the enfant terrible to talk controversy, Cannes and, er, pubic hair... LOVEFiLM: Where did the idea for Antichrist stem from? Lars von Trier: I concluded very early on in life that nature and... Read more
