A surreal experience
By ninka (45 reviews) from London , 24 Jul 2009[Highly rated reviewer]
A beautifully constructed film, which at times becomes slightly self indulgent and you either love it or hate it. Gone is the Dogme '95 look which was applied in The Idiots or even in Dogville, instead we are presented with glossy HD imagery equalling thousands of beautiful stills. This film is the combination of beautiful visuals with one morbid storyline behind it. The performances are superb by both Dafoe and Gainsbourg.
Very explicit, definitely not for the squeemish.- Was this review helpful to you?

(296)High on style but low on entertainment
By Shinko (25 reviews) from South Wales , 31 Aug 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
A difficult film to summarise in a few short sentences. A visually stunning film, but this descent into madness takes an age to get out of first gear.
Director Lars Von Trier, no stranger to controversy, clearly sets out to shock - but the threadbare plot and character development seem to suggest that shock is the soul purpose of the film.
Certainly Antichrist will polarise viewers; fans of torture porn will probably love the last 30 minutes, others may admire the first hour for its psychological themes and fine performances, but for me, the whole film remained uninteresting and puzzling. Being atheist, I failed to understand the religious motifs and metaphors, which resulted in a constant state of bewilderment - a state I assume most people who watch this film will experience throughout.- Was this review helpful to you?

the suffering of an insufferable couple
By itstinks (681 reviews) from North of Reading , 14 Jun 2012Von Trier seems to do these things on purppose and live of the controversy and some morons such as Mark Lamar and the Cannes crowd will always fall for it as long as you stick in slow motion black and white photography.
A totally ridiculous story that has some of the most misogynistic dialogue I can recall for a movie and worst of all spoken by the female.- Was this review helpful to you?
