In 1978, the BBC set itself the task of filming all of William Shakespeare's plays for television. The resulting productions, renowned for their loyalty to the text, utilised the best theatrical and television directors and brought great performances from leading contemporary actors. Mark Anthony, one of the three rulers of the Roman Empire, commands the eastern Mediterranean. Despite his infatuation with Cleopatra Queen of Egypt, he has to return to Rome. As his fellow ruler Octavius schemes, Mark Anthony rejoins Cleopatra and driven by blind passion, they confront the mighty empire.
