Still brilliant but mixed feelings
By imran (165 reviews) from London , 06 Jun 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
Even though I think the original film has been diluted due to the expansion of the Brando and Sheen characters, and with the addition of even more surreal and maybe slightly contrived stop-offs for the riverboat crew, there's no denying that rarely in the relatively short history of director's cuts has there been such an exciting expansion of a classic movie like there has been in Redux. I'm still not sure which version I prefer but I am one hundred percent sure the extra scenes were worth seeing. An absolute must for fans of the original.- Was this review helpful to you?

(209)Rent the original version.
By a customer , 06 Dec 2012This overextended versions ruins a fantastic piece of cinema. Rent the original version and don't wast your time on this. Far too long and totally pointless.- Was this review helpful to you?

The best war film of them all.
By Bobsview (559 reviews) from Gloucestershire , 23 Aug 2012Still the benchmark by which other war films should be judged. Outstanding photography, production, score, real horror, and really shows the madness of war, and the drug crazed US army in Vietnam.- Was this review helpful to you?

Watch the original
By MrBuffy (3 reviews) , 07 Aug 2012I give the 5 stars to the original release. The Redux version would get 4 stars because it feels flabby and contains a lot of unnecessary scenes that drag the story down. But the original: what a film! From the opening scenes of napalm exploding among palms to a Doors soundtrack to the final showdown with Kurtz himself, its an absolute classic. Even that miserable sod Halliwell gave it 3 stars!- Was this review helpful to you?

Genius Now
By MattMunro (13 reviews) , 09 Jul 2012Have to say I'm not a great fan of the redux version it somehow diminishes the film without really adding anything other than a discussion about the origins of the Vietnam war.. If you have never seen either version i would strongly recommend watching the original release, which is my personal favourite film of all time. Difficult to say anything that hasn't already been said but: superb cinematography, superb sound and sound track, brilliant acting performances, immersive and disturbing story, direction and production are genius. Manages the rare trick of sayings something profound and ambiguous without preaching or pretension and says more about war (without being a 'war film') and human nature than any film I have ever seen. The high watermark of Francis Ford Coppolas illustrious career and the best of the 'new Hollywood' of 1970s American cinema. A must see for any discerning film buff.- Was this review helpful to you?

One of a Kind
By anotheroriginalnickname (1 review) , 07 Jun 2012Like nothing I've ever seen before, expected something more like 'Full Metal Jacket' or 'Platoon' but i wasn't disappointed, if you like those films though then you need to watch this. It's a film I'm glad to say I've seen before I die.- Was this review helpful to you?
