Why make a found footage faux documentary if you are going to cut the thing as if it's a Hollywood action movie?

Worst film of the year.By TanujDua (6 reviews) from Oxford/Nottingham, England , 09 Sep 2011
[Highly rated reviewer]Want to know one film to avoid? Not only in the cinema but on DVD/Blu-ray too? Well this is that film! The trailer actually makes the film seem okay, a cheesy predictable cheap horror that tries to establish that the apparently cancelled Apollo 18 mission really went ahead, and the footage from that mission is whats featured in the film.
It actually looks good, all of the footage used is grainy, old, seems as though it was shot back in the 60s. The colours are what youd expect to see on an old camera, dull, but Im pretty sure the Moon is a pretty dull place. Lots of shaky cam as well since a good chunk of the footage was apparently shot on handheld cameras by the astronauts/cosmonauts themselves. In fact it seemed to be shot in a style extremely similar to The Blair Witch Project. Thats fine, if done well. The acting was horrendous. The characters didnt feel like real people, who were really in space and in danger. You didnt care about them at all, didnt care about whether theyd live or die. Couple this with the fact that its so boring.
The danger that they (the astronauts) encounter, which is pretty much ruined in the trailer, is pathetic. Before seeing the film I thought it had potential, I like films like this, ones that have a few characters and start out slow but build up the tension. Films like The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity. Sadly Apollo 18, while sharing many of the similarities with those films doesnt have the same build up up of tension throughout the first part before releasing a wave of screams at the end. Im definitely a fan of scary films, whether they be a slasher type film (like Scream) or a more tension driven film (like Paranormal Activity). This just isnt any of those. It tries to be, that is evident, but it just fails on nearly every single level. As I said earlier the actual style of the film is probably the best, most well part of it.
I wonder how director Gonzalo López-Gallego, who hasnt directed anything Ive heard of (most of its Spanish) feels about all of the negativity the film has received. The 3 main astronauts (and really the only 3 people who do anything in the film) are also relatively unknown, at least they havent been in anything worth remembering.
Overall Ill give this film a big fat dont watch! Ever. Its painfully boring and even though a lot of bad horror films turn out to be funny, this didnt. The joint the worst film of the year (along with Your Highness).

Slightly dull but well executed found footage rompBy Bassman71 (696 reviews) from Didsbury, England , 12 Aug 2013US Apollo 18 Moon mission, search for samples on surface, find abandoned Russian landing craft, find cosmonaut, samples arent what they seem, mayhem. Slightly dull but well executed found footage romp which considering the budget looks the part as a 1974 moon landing. It doesnt really do much for the first half hour but then kicks in and youre never really sure whats causing the issues adding to the suspense and also has a feeling of claustrophobia which adds to the atmosphere. Not particularly scary or jump out of your seat but not a bad low budget horror.
Good honest hokumBy Ulysess (12 reviews) from Belfast , 04 Aug 2013I don't understand why people have such a downer on this film. It's a well put together low-budget sci-fi horror with solid performances that has one or two genuine shock moments. What is really impressive and almost certainly lost on most people is the amazing attention to detail in all the sets, equipment and dialogue. If nothing else, respect is due for the research that went into the making of the film.
Apollo 18By a customer , 12 Apr 2013Lots of people don't think its a very good film, but I thought it was pretty good. I don't wanna spoil the film for anyone, so I wont say much else, other than... SPACE SPIDERS!!!

Err....Hollywood we have a problem.By Cashplays (51 reviews) , 07 Apr 2013The whole 'found footage' genre exploded after Blair Witch and this the next evolution of that. Footage of a secret Apollo moon mission is published on the internet and is then stitched together to make this film. Hmmm..... There are some creepy moments and times when I really got quite into it but all too quickly it nose dived into sillyness. It has some good ideas buried in there somewhere but the script and budget didn't allow them to do anything with them. They had just a little bit too much of an FX budget. Too little to be 'wow look at that!' and too much to force them to be creative. I like the ideas that were there but they could have done so much more with them. The end result is a could have been movie.
