One of the best italian movies ever. Nanni Moretti is a genius. Scenes like the Berlusconi election and the pastry chef musical are just unforgettable.

  • Film doesn't have anything to say

You really would have to enjoy seeing Nani Moretti prancing around to like this film. Moretti repeatedly says that he wants to make a serious political documentary bemoaning the election of Berlusconi, but then never goes anywhere with this. We end up seeing endless home video type footage of Moretti dancing around with his newborn son etc plus random clips of a musical involving a pastry chef. What does he want to say?

  • A joy from start to a wonderful finish

One of the great thrills over the past couple of years has been discovering the films of Nanni Moretti and this is a wonderful film from start to finish. It seems to capture the Italian spirit – always pre-occupied and never with the focus to drive through in that hard-nose Anglo Saxon way that seems to achieve everthing but get us nowhere. Here Nanni glimpses films that he would have made – or films that others were making whilst he was quietly wasting time. It is a brilliant trick of the light which is brought into sharp focus in the fabulous finale where Silvio Orlando finally finds his hat and we get to see the Trotskyist baker in his 1950s finery. Wonderful, quite simply wonderful!

  • Dated Docudrama

An interesting piece of autobiographical filming which I think would have gone down a lot bettter with the Italian intelligentsia in the 1990s than it does to us in the present. The director is Nanni Moretti, who went on to make the masterful 'The Son's Room'. In this film he comes across as a rather highly strung man in his forties who is having trouble with the ever erratic political situation in Italy, trying to produce a musical about cake decorating, and coping with the birth of his son. It's an engaging collection of incidental pieces, but not really great cinema.

I like this film probably just for the final sequence with the scooter and the dancing at the end. The rest of the film is a bit dull.
