I rented this after loving the adorable book by Alice Hoffman. Read the book - it's much better and quite different to the film.
However, the film is cute enough and a nice way to spend an hour and a half. A winner with the pre-teen market.
Although it helps enormously in your appreciation of this movie if you're a pre-pubescent girl who likes to squeal a lot, there's a pleasant good natured quality to this lightweight comedy that makes it fairly endurable. Paxton plays a mermaid who washes up into the lives of Roberts and Levesque who've spent all summer lusting after hunky lifeguard McDorlan. And that's about it, plotwise. But there are some vaguely amusing situations to be had. And lots of squealing.
