From the absence of any reviews for this title there have clearly been very few rentals. This is a pity because Pasolini has put together a version of the Arabian Nights that is both erotic and very beautiful to look at; these images would be worth catching on the big screen. Unlikely to be seen at a cinema near you, however. There is never a dull image to look at; Pasolini is a master of filmic composition. And the director coaxes believable performances from his cast of unknowns. If I have a criticism it is that the episodic nature of the erotic tales makes for very uneven pacing and it seems a long 125 minutes. This can be remedied by watching in two or more parts. Some viewers may find the dubbing of the post syncronised sound a bit off but this was standard practice in Italian films and did not spoil my enjoyment.

Wow - I never knew there was so much nudity in mainstream movies in those days. The story was quite adventurous but generally easy to follow.

If you like decent acting and a story that makes sense this will annoy you - be warned. Its frustrating, utterly implausible and frankly boring. Truly one man out on a limb out of control and not paying attention to his audience. Pointless. Its periodically punctuated by cackling nude idiots in a fashion that I am sure is supposed to signify something important and profound but lets face it is just a poor child (children) probably not understanding what the hell is going on. Its a thin line trod here, I cant believe it got made let alone released but then George Lucas had Ja Ja Binks so anything is possible. Try it though, see if you can stick with it.

  • ancient blue movie but no content worth watching

What a load of rubbish. Like an early blue film, but even less interesting content. The subtitles are a preferred diversion from the endless nude bodies - mainly young boys

which become boring quite quickly then sickening. I agree with a previous review craaaaap.

This won awards when it first came out, which may mystify some. On the positives, it seems pretty close to the 'real' Arabian Nights, which contains more sex than you might imagine and therefore so does this film. Forget your Disney versions, there is sex and nudity here although not necessarily gratuitous if you have read the book(s). The scenery is amazing and I have to applaud the director's desire to go beyond the Fry's Turkish Delights book of Middle Eastern cliches. I am no expert, but the architecture, costumes, customs and even food depicted seemed very authentic and this alone made the film kind of compelling to watch (although towards the end you can't stop yourself thinking 'when's the car chase?'). The biggest draw back is the acting - if Pasolini paid for professional acting, he should demand a refund. It looks like (and another review confirms) locals dragooned into service. The poor acting and the rather frank European arthouse depiction of nudity make the sex less than titillating, whilst the rolling of one story into another, although kind of clever, can feel a little baffling. I would say this is for Art house fanatics only
